Payroll Manager

💰 $117k-$158k

Job description

Virta Health is on a mission to transform type 2 diabetes and weight-loss care. Current treatment approaches aren’t working—over half of US adults have either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, and obesity rates are at an all-time high. Virta is changing this by helping people reverse their metabolic condition through innovations in technology, personalized nutrition, and virtual care delivery reinvented from the ground up. We have raised over $350 million from top-tier investors, and partner with the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations to help their employees and members restore their health and take back their lives. Join us on our mission to reverse diabetes and obesity in one billion people.

The Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant payroll processing across a fully remote workforce. This role leads the payroll team, supports internal and external audits, ensures SOX compliance, and ensures Virta has scalable, well-documented payroll processes and controls. You’ll collaborate closely with Finance, Accounting, HR, and Legal, and drive continuous improvements to support Virta’s rapid growth.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor the payroll team, providing coaching, support, and training to ensure accuracy and efficiency in payroll processing.

  • Own the preparation, documentation, and execution of multi-state payroll cycles, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to internal deadlines.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and labor regulations, as well as internal controls expectations such as SOX compliance, while staying current with evolving legislation and industry best practices.

  • Lead and execute payroll audits, including ongoing reconciliations of payroll accounts, tax withholdings, benefits contributions, and other deductions.

  • Prepare and analyze payroll reports, conduct audits to identify discrepancies or issues, and reconcile payroll accounts. Work closely within the team and Accounting to coordinate employee information and reporting, including headcount analysis, labor cost trends, and other key performance metrics.

  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex payroll issues, investigating and resolving discrepancies, and addressing concerns from employees and other departments.

  • Partner with Accounting and Legal to ensure payroll operations are well-documented, audit-ready, and aligned with evolving compliance expectations as the company scales.

  • Champion continuous process improvement; identify opportunities to automate workflows, reduce errors, and scale payroll operations for IPO readiness.

  • Lead or support key initiatives such as system upgrades, vendor transitions, new benefit implementations, and M&A-related payroll integration.

90 Day Plan

Within your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will do the following:

  • Fully own and run end-to-end payroll processing while leading and supporting the payroll team.

  • Evaluate and begin proposing updates to payroll operations, documentation, and policies for improved accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, responsiveness, and exceptional attention to detail in all employee and stakeholder interactions.

  • Collaborate directly with employees and functional leaders to resolve payroll issues, support reporting needs, and lead or assist with internal audits.

  • Begin assessing documentation and internal controls related to payroll processes to support SOX readiness and future audit requirements.

Must-Haves

  • 5+ years of multi-state payroll experience, including experience leading and developing a payroll team in a fast-paced or high-growth environment.

  • Advanced proficiency in payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Workday), HRIS systems, Excel, and Google Workspace.

  • Deep knowledge of U.S. federal and state payroll regulations, including FLSA, wage and hour laws, and tax compliance.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in handling high-volume data.

  • Clear and effective communicator, capable of explaining payroll policies and resolving employee concerns with professionalism.

  • Demonstrated discretion and ability to handle sensitive employee data with a high level of confidentiality.

Values-driven culture

Virta’s company values drive our culture, so you’ll do well if:

  • You put people first and take care of yourself, your peers, and our patients equally

  • You have a strong sense of ownership and take initiative while empowering others to do the same

  • You prioritize positive impact over busy work

  • You have no ego and understand that everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of experience
