About Gusto

Gusto is a modern, online people platform that helps small businesses take care of their teams. On top of full-service payroll, Gusto offers health insurance, 401(k)s, expert HR, and team management tools. Today, Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York serve more than 400,000 businesses nationwide.

Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. That’s why we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

About the Role:

Gusto is looking for a highly skilled and motivated Product Analyst with extensive experience (ideally 10 years or more) applying their expertise in a business environment to join our Data Science team. As a Product Analyst, you will play a crucial role in leveraging data to drive strategic decision-making and contribute to the overall success of our organization. The ideal candidate is a skilled data storyteller with a strong analytical mindset, top-notch SQL skills, dedication to well-documented and structured data, an eye for data visualization design, and a passion for applying these skills to help small businesses thrive.

In this role you will work closely with our Decision Science, Product, Engineering, Finance, Design, Business Intelligence, ML developers and other teams to become an expert in the data for your domain. You will partner directly with the Heads of Product, Engineering and Design to define the strategy of the Gusto Money Group at Gusto. You will track metrics that help us understand our business performance, and dive deep into our data to deliver insights and drive impact.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Leading: Own ambiguous problems, interact with multiple stakeholders, and establish structures and processes to take our analytics to the next level.
  • Data Thought Partnership: Collaborate with product managers, engineering leads, designers, and operations teams to drive data efforts for large product areas. Shape product strategy by identifying what to build, how to measure success, and how to iterate based on data.
  • Analysis: Perform analyses to extract meaningful insights and identify trends, patterns, and correlations relevant to our business, products, and services.
  • Reporting and Visualization: Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations to effectively communicate key findings and trends to stakeholders.
  • Data Quality: Review data integrity, accuracy, and metric logic. Identify and work with relevant teams to resolve data issues and implement data governance best practices.
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor and evaluate the performance of our products and services, conducting regular data-driven reviews and providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Instrumentation: Partner with engineering and product to define and implement event instrumentation plans. Ensure data is robust, consistent, and enables accurate measurement of user behavior and product performance.
  • Inference: Apply basic statistical techniques, such as A/B testing and before/after analyses, to draw meaningful insights, assess causality, and support confident decision-making.
  • Influence: Work closely with members of our other Data Teams - Decision Science, Model Developers, Analytics Engineering, and Data Platform - to promote a data-informed mindset across the company through education and role modeling.
  • Product Strategy Influence: Bring the voice of the user into product decision-making. Combine behavioral insights, market context, and business goals to guide roadmaps and prioritization.
  • Builder Mindset: Be responsive, build and iterate quickly, take ownership of the data needs and opportunities in your area, stay curious, and produce data products that help the business.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Successful applicants typically have 10+ years of analytical experience at a product-focused software company.
  • Experience working with and analyzing complex datasets, including QA, querying, summarizing, visualizing, and analyses.
  • Experience designing and analyzing A/B tests in a production environment.
  • Excellent SQL skills with demonstrated ability to write efficient queries.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively delivering findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Expertise in data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Looker, Hex, Omni, etc)
  • Experience collaborating with data engineering teams to design and implement data models that facilitate data analysis, reporting, and business intelligence needs.

If you are passionate about using data to drive strategic decisions and help small businesses thrive, we’d love to hear from you!

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $157,000/yr - $196,000/yr in Denver, Chicago, Miami, Austin and Atlanta, $171,000/yr - $214,000/yr in Los Angeles, $185,000/yr - $230,000 for San Francisco, Seattle and New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto’s subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
