ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU is seeking applicants for a full-time Regional Campaign Strategist in the National Political Advocacy Department. This position can be hybrid-based out of our Washington, D.C. National office (with in-office requirements of two days per week or eight days per month), or remote-based in one of the states within Region 1 (Northwest): AK, ID, MN, MT, OR, SD, ND, HI, WA, WI, and WY.

The National Political Advocacy Department builds power to achieve an accountable, representative democracy. We have ambitious goals across Reproductive Freedom, Democracy and Voting Rights, Systemic Equality, Immigration, Trans Justice, Criminal Justice and other core issues in order to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties, and advance the freedom, equality, ability to prosper, and humanity of all People.

Our department conducts analysis, develops policy, crafts world class campaigns and situates the ACLU to have impact across legislative, administrative, and electoral levers. We are policy experts, lawyers, community organizers, lobbyists, campaign strategists, electoral specialists, program managers and more. We partner across the ACLU to drive national efforts, and support and amplify the priorities of our affiliates. We work to center principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in our approach.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Reporting to the Senior Advisor & Regional Campaign Lead, the Regional Campaign Strategist - Northwest you’ll contribute to varied aspects of campaign planning, including helping to develop campaign goals, tactics, and plans to achieve outcomes on specific issues areas including developing strong affiliate relationships across the federated organization.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

YOUR DAY TO DAY

You’ll be instrumental in advancing our campaigns by:

  • Partnering with Regional Lead-level staff to help develop and manage campaign budgets and embed in priority affiliate legislative or advocacy campaigns with guidance
  • Utilize a variety of campaign tactics and tools, including constituent/voter targeting, developing advertisements (TV, radio, print), polling, and creating innovative campaign strategies for earned media and other purposes, all under the direction of Regional Lead-level staff
  • Work closely with our Organizing Division to develop and execute relevant campaign plans.  Coordinate with various stakeholders, affiliate staff, and national staff, including policy teams, to develop strategic partnerships that amplify the ACLU’s influence.
  • Help facilitate in-person meetings, planning sessions, and campaign events in priority jurisdictions as needed.
  • Exercise independent judgement to creatively solve problems and adjust priorities as needed to adapt to a changing external environment
  • In conjunction with Director-level staff, may help oversee consultant relationships
  • Potentially provide subject matter expertise, advice, and support to colleagues in the State Campaigns Division as they navigate new issue areas.
  • Work in coordination with other stakeholders, affiliate staff, and national staff, including policy staff within the political advocacy department
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with issue advocacy and/or electoral campaigning at the federal, state, or local levels, including campaign management experience
  • Substantive experience designing campaign strategy and executing campaign plans and tactics
  • Ability to work largely independently as well as within a team
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills
  • Familiarity building, leading, and working within coalitions
  • Skilled at prioritizing and managing various tasks in a dynamic environment, ensuring efficient and timely completion of work while adapting to evolving demands with a focused approach
  • Fluency, expertise and experience in at least one ACLU issue area
  • Comfort with policy, including an ability to efficiently and effectively weave policy objectives into campaign execution
  • Willingness to travel

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience doing advocacy on both issue campaigns and electoral campaigns, a plus
  • Experience doing legislative and administrative advocacy, a plus
  • Experience doing grassroots organizing, a plus

COMPENSATION

The ACLU values equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. Consistent with the ACLU’s compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for this role. The annual salary for this position is $137,206 (Level F), reflective of a position based in New York, NY, where our National offices are headquartered. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
