The opportunity
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer focused on Design Systems to join our design team in a contract capacity. You’ll partner closely with a soon-to-be-hired Design Systems Engineer and work cross-functionally to evolve Altruist’s design system.
In this role, you’ll lead the creation and maintenance of scalable, accessible, and elegant UI components—helping teams design and build faster without compromising quality. You’ll also play a key role in defining system processes, documentation, and governance while ensuring alignment between design and engineering. You will be a key advocate for product quality across the broader product team, ensuring that design systems thinking contributes to cohesive, high-quality user experiences.
This is a contract role with an expected duration of 6 months, with potential to extend. This position is remote-friendly, with the option to work onsite in our San Francisco office.
Your impact
- Lead the vision, strategy, and execution of Altruist’s design system.
- Design new components and evolve existing ones within Figma libraries.
- Collaborate closely with engineering to ensure design-code alignment across Figma and Storybook.
- Define and document reusable components, patterns, and design tokens.
- Promote usability, accessibility (WCAG), and scalability across all product surfaces.
- Establish lightweight, scalable processes for system contributions and governance.
- Conduct audits to identify inconsistencies and opportunities for systematization.
- Use research and internal feedback to evolve system guidance and tooling.
- Mentor product designers on system best practices and contributions.
- Explore how AI tooling can enhance system design workflows and efficiency.
What you bring
- 6+ years of product design experience, including 2+ years focused on design systems in product-led environments.
- Expertise in Figma, component architecture, atomic design, and managing large design libraries.
- Experience supporting design systems for both desktop and mobile platforms.
- Technical fluency—you understand HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks like React, which we currently use. (Bonus if you can code, but not required)
- Familiarity with component documentation tools like Storybook (which we use) or equivalent platforms to ensure consistency between design and code.
- Strong visual design craft, with a deep understanding of layout, hierarchy, and interaction.
- Excellent communication skills—you’re a clear, thoughtful collaborator and documentation pro.
- Comfort working in fast-paced, iterative environments with high ambiguity.
- A proactive, ownership-driven mindset—you bring pride and polish to your work.
- Bonus: Experience building or contributing to motion design standards within a design system.
- Bonus: Experience working across both consumer and enterprise applications.

Total compensation includes a competitive benefits package along with equity in the form of Stock Options (ISOs) for eligible roles.
