The opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer focused on Design Systems to join our design team in a contract capacity. You’ll partner closely with a soon-to-be-hired Design Systems Engineer and work cross-functionally to evolve Altruist’s design system.

In this role, you’ll lead the creation and maintenance of scalable, accessible, and elegant UI components—helping teams design and build faster without compromising quality. You’ll also play a key role in defining system processes, documentation, and governance while ensuring alignment between design and engineering. You will be a key advocate for product quality across the broader product team, ensuring that design systems thinking contributes to cohesive, high-quality user experiences.

This is a contract role with an expected duration of 6 months, with potential to extend. This position is remote-friendly, with the option to work onsite in our San Francisco office.

Your impact

  • Lead the vision, strategy, and execution of Altruist’s design system.
  • Design new components and evolve existing ones within Figma libraries.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to ensure design-code alignment across Figma and Storybook.
  • Define and document reusable components, patterns, and design tokens.
  • Promote usability, accessibility (WCAG), and scalability across all product surfaces.
  • Establish lightweight, scalable processes for system contributions and governance.
  • Conduct audits to identify inconsistencies and opportunities for systematization.
  • Use research and internal feedback to evolve system guidance and tooling.
  • Mentor product designers on system best practices and contributions.
  • Explore how AI tooling can enhance system design workflows and efficiency.

What you bring

  • 6+ years of product design experience, including 2+ years focused on design systems in product-led environments.
  • Expertise in Figma, component architecture, atomic design, and managing large design libraries.
  • Experience supporting design systems for both desktop and mobile platforms.
  • Technical fluency—you understand HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks like React, which we currently use. (Bonus if you can code, but not required)
  • Familiarity with component documentation tools like Storybook (which we use) or equivalent platforms to ensure consistency between design and code.
  • Strong visual design craft, with a deep understanding of layout, hierarchy, and interaction.
  • Excellent communication skills—you’re a clear, thoughtful collaborator and documentation pro.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, iterative environments with high ambiguity.
  • A proactive, ownership-driven mindset—you bring pride and polish to your work.
  • Bonus: Experience building or contributing to motion design standards within a design system.
  • Bonus: Experience working across both consumer and enterprise applications.

Please note that the compensation and benefits outlined below are applicable solely to individuals classified as full-time employees; independent contractors and other non-full-time personnel are not eligible for these benefits.

What we bring

Attracting and retaining top-tier talent is a priority. We are proud of the culture we’ve built and are cognizant of the ever-changing professional landscape. Our dynamic offering of perks and benefits are tailored for you to feel your best while doing your best.

  • A hybrid work schedule for most positions to promote strong, in-person collaboration and a healthy work-life-balance.
  • Stunning, amenity-filled office spaces in Culver City, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Dallas, TX. Our offices are intentionally designed for comfort, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Competitive pay, as well as equity for eligible positions
  • Premium healthcare, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • 401k savings plan with matching contributions and immediate vesting
  • Generous paid parental leave
  • Professional growth and development opportunities including an employee mobility program and an annual L&D budget allocation for each employee
  • Physical and emotional wellness programs that nurture both your mind and body
  • Company perks program (includes discounts on pet insurance, fitness, cell phone plans, entertainment and travel, etc.)
  • Financial guidance program (includes counseling on navigating debt, tracking personal spend, saving and planning goals, home-purchasing preparedness, etc.)

Total compensation includes a competitive benefits package along with equity in the form of Stock Options (ISOs) for eligible roles. For salaried positions, a salary offer will be determined by a number of factors including experience, skill level, internal pay equity, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs regularly to ensure fair, equitable, and competitive pay. At Altruist, we are committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation by leveraging market data to inform our pay bands. Base salaries will be reviewed at regular intervals throughout the year, typically in conjunction with performance review cycles. By evaluating compensation on a regular basis, we are able to reward high performance and ensure all employees have opportunities for growth.
