As Staff Engineer (f/m/diverse) - Hybrid you are a key player in uncovering the potential of technology to serve our business objectives. You develop solutions for adaptive and loosely coupled distributed systems. You deliver value with reliable and secure software, delighting our customers while achieving our business goals. What you’ll do
- Act as the technical lead and architect for a cross-functional Agile squad, supporting them daily with technical guidance, problem-solving, and process improvements
- Collaborate with product owners to define and shape product visions by providing strategic technical direction
- Moderate between development teams and internal business stakeholders, helping translate complex business needs into clear technical requirements
- Drive the successful delivery of projects from inception to deployment, identifying complex mapping, integration, or interface needs
- Lead the design, development, and integration of AI-driven features such as personalisation, product recommendations and conversational agents
- Evaluate and apply emerging AI/ML technologies to solve real-world business problems, ensuring responsible and ethical use of AI
- Challenge technical decisions and propose sustainable alternatives that support long-term business and platform goals
- Champion quality, security, scalability, and observability in system architecture and software delivery
- Mentor engineers and foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and engineering excellence
- Represent the engineering team in strategic initiatives, ensuring technology aligns with business outcomes.
What you’ll need
- 8+ years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages
- Solid experience with both front-end and back-end software development, with deep understanding of modern, complex system architectures
- Experience designing and implementing microservice oriented architecture with attention to scalability, resilience, and maintainability
- Strong proficiency in technologies such as Java, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Spring, JEE, Vue.js, Angular, REST, and event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka)
- Hands-on experience with at least one database system (e.g., Elastic search, Cassandra, MSSQL, MySQL)
- Proven experience working with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, build and deployment automation, and regression testing strategies
- Practical knowledge of Agile methodologies like Scrum or Kanban, with experience in leading or facilitating technical discussions within such frameworks.
- Experience in the e-commerce domain is highly desirable.
What you’ll bring
- Experience implementing AI/ML features in production environments
- Exposure to and hands-on understanding of applications and architectures involving conversational agents, fine-tuning, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Strong programming and engineering skills, with the ability to design, build, and maintain scalable AI systems
- Clear, effective communication skills, with the ability to translate complex AI concepts into practical, actionable solutions for cross-functional teams
- A strategic mindset and the ability to balance technical depth with business impact
- Proven ability to moderate technical discussions and guide teams toward solutions that meet both business and engineering objectives
- A passion for mentoring and elevating engineering teams
- Curiosity, innovation, and a strong bias toward pragmatic, customer-centric solutions.
Remote first set up (within Germany): We believe in a hybrid working model with a remote-first approach. This means that our company is optimised for work to be done remotely no matter where you are living in Germany. We believe in flexibility and trusted working times, so there is no standardised “quota” for on-site presence in the office. On average, our employees that lives all across Germany comes to our Cologne office 1-2 times per month for team bonding and/or selected events (i.e. for onboarding, team/company events/workshops)
