Software Development

Mid-level

Job description

Quorum is building the future of AI-powered public affairs software. With our flagship AI product, Quorum Copilot, we’re transforming how government affairs teams process complex data—from legislative text and social media to policy documents and testimony. At the intersection of data engineering and product development, we’re looking for a seasoned AI Engineer who combines deep technical expertise with a collaborative and leadership-driven mindset.

As a Staff AI Engineer, you will be a key technical leader on the team—helping to architect and scale GenAI systems that power Quorum Copilot and its ecosystem of features. This role requires not only strong technical skills in data platforms, cloud infrastructure, and LLM integration, but also the ability to influence cross-functional decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with product leaders to drive high-impact outcomes.

This is a hands-on builder role—not focused on research. You’ll be expected to bring deep experience in launching and iterating on production GenAI features, understanding the real-world challenges of semantic search, personalization, and quality control.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of GenAI pipelines and services that support semantic search, personalization, and summarization for legislative data.
  • Architect scalable and modular Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, agentic systems, integrating vector search, embeddings, and cloud-native APIs.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, and other Engineering teams to shape the roadmap and ensure reliable, performant, and user-aligned AI experiences.
  • Serve as a technical mentor across the AI engineering team—conducting reviews, guiding system design, and supporting team growth.
  • Make high-impact architectural decisions that balance performance, cost, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Stay current with emerging frameworks and tools, and champion pragmatic adoption where appropriate.
  • Influence best practices around AI-first development and clean service-oriented architecture.
  • Debug and optimize AI-powered features to improve accuracy, latency, and user experience.

You Should Have

  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including at least 1+ years shipping AI/LLM-based products in production.
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence product direction.
  • Deep proficiency with Python, cloud platforms (especially AWS), and modern data engineering patterns.
  • Experience with vector databases and semantic search systems (OpenSearch, Qdrant, etc).
  • Strong understanding of embedding models, LLM-based systems, and RAG architectures.
  • Familiarity with tools like LangChain, LlamaIndex, or Bedrock.
  • Experience defining and iterating on LLM evaluation metrics, evaluation sets, production feedback loops, optimizing for precision, recall, and real-world accuracy.
  • Excellent collaboration skills—you can work closely with product managers, UX designers, and cross-functional engineers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to influence through documentation and discussion.
  • Experience in an AI-First engineering environment with tools like Github Copilot, Augment, or Cursor.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Django or similar Python web frameworks.
  • Frontend experience (TypeScript/React) with AI-first interfaces.
  • Domain familiarity in civic tech, legal tech, or policy-driven environments.

Why You’ll Love Working at Quorum

  • Work on one of the most ambitious and impactful GenAI initiatives in civic tech.
  • Lead the charge on greenfield systems and technical innovation—not just maintenance.
  • Join a tight-knit, fast-moving, mission-driven engineering team.
  • Generous benefits, flexible time off, and a deep culture of learning, collaboration, and support.
