General Summary

The VP, Head of R&D is part of the visionary endeavors behind the technology that fuels LAIKA’s groundbreaking storytelling. This role is all about pushing boundaries—designing and evolving the software and systems that empower our artists, elevate our craft, and redefine what’s possible in stop-motion and hybrid filmmaking.

Leading cross-disciplinary efforts, this role bridges production and technology, driving a portfolio of cutting-edge projects that shape the future of animation. From pioneering advancements in VFX and stop motion to exploring emerging frontiers like machine learning, diffusion models, and virtual production, the VP, Head of R&D will chart the course for the next generation of filmmaking innovation—seamlessly integrating technology into LAIKA’s signature artistry and bold cinematic vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the design and deployment of cutting-edge software systems and infrastructure that elevate creative workflows and enhance production efficiency.
  • Champion innovation by identifying and implementing next-generation production technologies that align with LAIKA’s bold artistic vision and technical ambitions.
  • Push the boundaries of stop-motion and VFX, driving technological advancements to meet the evolving creative challenges of films in development.
  • Partner closely with production and technology teams to ensure seamless integration of new tools and processes into LAIKA’s unique filmmaking pipeline.
  • Craft and execute R&D project strategies, including staffing, budgets, schedules, and roadmaps for development, testing, and implementation.
  • Lead and inspire project-based teams of researchers and developers, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous innovation.
  • Define and drive a strategic R&D roadmap, ensuring alignment with LAIKA’s long-term vision for storytelling and technological excellence.
  • Engage executives and key stakeholders, presenting R&D strategies and progress to secure buy-in and resources for groundbreaking initiatives.
  • Forge strategic partnerships with top research institutions and technology providers, tapping into the latest advancements to propel LAIKA’s innovation.
  • Uphold the highest standards of quality and security, ensuring all R&D projects adhere to industry best practices while pushing the limits of what’s possible in animation.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience driving R&D in media technology, with at least 5 years in a leadership role shaping innovation.
  • Proven track record of leading groundbreaking research and development projects that push creative and technical boundaries.
  • Expertise in cloud technologies, with hands-on experience in AWS, Azure, or GCP environments.
  • Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including CI/CD workflows and version control best practices.
  • Strong proficiency in VFX pipelines, CG animation, and machine learning, with a focus on their applications in film production.
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills, inspiring cross-disciplinary teams to innovate and execute at the highest level.
  • Collaborative mindset, thriving in dynamic environments where production and technology intersect.
  • Strong project management abilities, balancing multiple high-impact initiatives with efficiency and strategic vision.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to both creative and executive audiences.

Location

On-site in Hillsboro, OR and also eligible for remote work.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience.
