Advancing physical sciences through programs, federations, and publishing

About American Institute of Physics

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) was founded in 1931 as a non-profit organization that advances, promotes, and serves the physical sciences. We operate as a federation of physical science societies, representing over 120,000 scientists, engineers, educators, and students worldwide. Member societies include the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), American Astronomical Society (AAS), ACA: The Structural Science Society, American Meteorological Society (AMS), American Physical Society (APS), AVS: Science & Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing, Optica, and the Society of Rheology (SoR).

We offer programs, products, and services to support physical scientists. Our research team studies the historical and contemporary social, cultural, economic, and policy aspects of the physical sciences. We focus on creating a welcoming culture, removing barriers, influencing public policy, preserving 20th and 21st-century science records, and fostering strong career paths for physical science professionals. We sponsor two scientists annually to advise Congress for a year and advocate through our federation to support the community.

We provide grants, including multiyear grants for collaborative research, Grants-in-Aid for historical research (for students and scholars), and Grants to Archives to make historical records accessible. We also sponsor conferences for early-career scholars in the history of physical sciences. AIP Publishing is our wholly owned not-for-profit subsidiary.

In 2020, we launched the AIP Foundation to support our programs. These programs preserve physics history, foster future generations of physicists, and promote equity and accessibility in the field. We have offices in College Park, MD, and Washington, DC. AIP Publishing is in Melville, NY.
