Job description
About Altruist
Altruist is transforming the multi-trillion dollar wealth management industry by building an AI platform for wealth professionals. We partner with financial advisors nationwide, empowering them to grow, optimize time and resources, and deliver superior outcomes for their clients.
We’re looking for exceptional talent to help us achieve our mission of making financial advice better, more affordable, and accessible to all. If you’re passionate about challenging the status quo and want to do the most important work of your life, we’d love to meet you!
But first, our values
Kindness - Kindness doesn’t just equal niceness. We listen to understand. We embrace, and encourage healthy debate and diverse perspectives. We approach conflict openly, honestly, and respectfully.
Brilliance - Humility is the skill we’re most proud of and possessing a growth mindset is always top of mind. We take ownership in everything we touch; regularly using our unique superpowers to reach a common goal as a team. We succeed and fail as one.
Grit - When challenges arise, we stay laser focused on achieving our mission and finding a way forward, even when it’s hard. We are nimble and maintain a sense of urgency, swiftly adapting to change and overcoming obstacles.
The opportunity
Hazel is Altruist’s AI platform for financial advisors that integrates across their tech stack and turns scattered data into actionable outcomes. We’re hiring an experienced Staff Product Designer for Hazel’s Admin AI—the agent that sits alongside advisors and their teams to capture context, manage work, and take action across notes, meetings, inbox, and tasks.
- This is an individual-contributor role reporting to the AI Product Design Manager.
- You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Research and own Hazel’s end-to-end Admin AI experience.
- This role is hybrid, with three in-office days per week at our San Francisco Financial District location.
What you’ll do
- Design agentic workflows for real admin work
- Own the Admin AI experience across core surfaces like note-taking, meetings, inbox, and tasks.
- Design how Hazel captures context, summarizes information, follows up, asks clarifying questions, and takes action on a user’s behalf—while staying predictable, transparent, and trustworthy.
- Invent new interaction patterns for AI-assisted work where traditional UI doesn’t fit, blending automation, suggestions, and human control to reduce cognitive load without hiding important context.
- Define how the agent communicates and collaborates
- Design patterns for how Hazel signals progress, uncertainty, permissions, and handoffs across multi-step and asynchronous workflows.
- Shape how Hazel explains what it’s doing, why it’s doing it, and what it needs from the user in a way that feels intuitive and trustworthy.
- Prototype and ship in code
- Build functional prototypes using real front-end code—not just static mockups.
- Work closely with engineers to refine interaction details and ship features into production, owning features from concept through launch.
- Iterate quickly as Hazel evolves
- Design, test, and refine experiences in tight feedback loops as Hazel’s capabilities expand with model improvements.
- Work on critical-path features, adapting designs as the underlying agent becomes more capable and the product surface area grows.
- When you see an issue with the UI or UX, you’ll have the autonomy to fix it yourself in code and ship.
- Work fluidly across disciplines and raise the craft bar
- Pair with product marketing, brand, and engineers on implementation, explore new model behaviors with research, and pressure-test ideas directly with users and design partners.
- Contribute to and help evolve Ethos, our design system, ensuring pixel-perfect implementation and consistent interaction patterns across Hazel and the broader platform.
- Obsess over the details that make admin tools feel calm, fast, and reliable: clear hierarchy, thoughtful defaults, crisp feedback loops, and minimal friction in day-to-day use.
What you bring
- 10+ years of experience in product design, with a focus on complex, multi-step workflows and end-to-end ownership from discovery through launch.
- Strong interaction design fundamentals and a track record of shipping real products—not just concepts or prototypes.
- Ability to prototype and build in code (e.g., HTML/CSS/JavaScript/TypeScript, React, or similar), and comfort working directly in front-end codebases.
- A systems-level mindset for how features connect across notes, meetings, inbox, and tasks, and how those pieces should feel cohesive in one admin agent experience.
- High craft bar and strong taste in interaction, UX writing, and visual hierarchy, with the portfolio to back it up.
- Comfort designing in ambiguous problem spaces with evolving constraints and rapidly changing AI capabilities.
- Clear communication and strong, low-ego collaboration with Product, Engineering, and Research.
Bonus points if you bring
- Experience designing or building AI-powered or agentic products, especially those that automate or assist with complex knowledge work.
- Background in productivity tools, admin workflows, or advisor/knowledge work software.
- Familiarity with design systems and front-end component libraries, ideally in React or similar ecosystems.
Before you apply
To be considered for this role, you must:
- Provide a portfolio with clear, high-quality examples of shipped product work (not just mockups).
- Include any passwords required to access your portfolio; password-protected portfolios without credentials cannot be reviewed.
- Have at least 7 years experience; candidates with less than 7 years of relevant professional experience will not be considered for this role.
