About Gruntwork
We founded Gruntwork in 2016 to provide Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions, specializing in AWS infrastructure deployment and DevOps workflows using Terraform, OpenTofu, and Terragrunt. We offer a DevOps Framework to build well-architected IaC foundations and a Platform with tools for the entire IaC lifecycle, including deploying, managing, updating, and tearing down infrastructure.
Our core products include our IaC Library, which has over 300 OpenTofu/Terraform modules for AWS foundations, application deployment, and data storage. Our Account Factory automates the creation and configuration of new AWS accounts and Git repositories. Our Pipelines deploy infrastructure changes from GitHub/GitLab PRs and manage infrastructure drift, and Patcher keeps IaC up to date by discovering dependencies and applying patches. Customers get 100% of our code.
We actively contribute to open-source projects, and we’re a founding and core member of OpenTofu. We also created and maintain Terragrunt. We offer tiered support services (Standard, Silver, Gold) for our platform. These include help with configuration, deployment automation, troubleshooting, bug fixes, general DevOps guidance, and dedicated support for open-source Terragrunt and OpenTofu.
Mission & Values
Our mission is to make software delivery 10 times easier, reducing the time customers spend managing infrastructure so they can concentrate on their core work. Our secondary, social mission is to show that being a human-friendly company benefits business, including financial stability, team health, and positive impact on stakeholders and society.
Our core values are:
- Thinking like an owner
- Taking pride in your craft through excellence and quality
- Getting things done by prioritizing action over perfection
- Practicing incrementalism to optimize for fast feedback and quick recovery
- Lifting up teammates through shared knowledge and challenges
- Always doing the right thing with fairness and ethics
Team & Culture
We are a 100% remote-first company with 11 to 50 employees. We prioritize a ‘human-friendly’ culture, aiming to build great products and a great company. We’re bootstrapped without external investment or debt, which allows us to focus long-term on customer needs and employee well-being, rather than investor pressure. We are transparent by default, sharing monthly financials, salaries, equity grants, and bonuses with all employees.
Our culture emphasizes a sustainable work-life balance, discouraging excessive hours and promoting intentional commitment planning. Our hiring process includes initial screening, a verbal deep dive on skills (without puzzles or whiteboard coding), a values fit interview, and a paid trial project to simulate a real workday experience.
Benefits & Perks
We offer competitive, above-market salaries determined by transparent formulas that consider career track, level, and location. Employees receive generous, formula-based equity grants, including a progressive equity plan that increases proceeds on large exit events. We also provide annual profit-sharing bonuses based on company profits and tenure.
We provide comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, with most premiums fully covered. We include a hardware budget, providing a new Apple MacBook Pro (or equivalent) upon joining. Employees own this hardware, which is replaced every three years. We contribute 3% of salary to employee retirement plans, such as 401(k) or pension. Employees receive a personal wellness budget of $1,000 USD per month for expenses related to workspace, health, time savings, or learning.
We operate as a 100% remote-first workplace. We typically hire full-time employees within North and South American time zones to ensure meeting overlap. We host regular in-person team meetups, known as ‘GruntCons,’ three to four times a year in various locations. We also enforce a minimum vacation policy of four weeks per year, in addition to a company-wide two-week winter holiday shutdown. We designate Tuesdays and Thursdays as meeting-free days to promote focused work.
