About Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
We are Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), an applied science laboratory founded in 1952 and located in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are part of the National Nuclear Security Administration within the Department of Energy and operate on a one-square-mile campus in Livermore, CA.
We use science, technology, and engineering to address national security problems. Our work includes nuclear deterrence, counterterrorism, nonproliferation, defense, intelligence, and energy and environmental security. We develop scientific insights and engineering capabilities to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. We also research Earth system dynamics, create technologies for domestic energy production and environmental sustainability, and prepare for and respond to threats from weapons of mass destruction. We also work on multi-domain deterrence, using technology and analysis in strategic defense, conventional strike warfare, space, cyber, and technology competition.
Our specialties include government research, energy, fundamental science, defense, R&D, physics, stockpile stewardship, additive manufacturing, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, international collaboration, education, high-performance computing (HPC), environment, and counterterrorism. We house powerful supercomputers and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) for inertial confinement fusion and high energy density science.
