Develops AI-powered, takeoff-to-touchdown autonomous flight software for military and civil aircraft systems.

About Merlin

We are a U.S.-based developer of takeoff-to-touchdown autonomy for both legacy and next-generation airborne systems. We build aircraft-agnostic, AI-powered software, known as the Merlin Pilot, designed for military and civil programs. Our technology has been proven through hundreds of autonomous flights from test facilities globally and currently powers a growing range of missions and aircraft, including Tanker, Transport, Turboprop, Twin Prop, Uncrewed Aircraft, Light Aircraft, Rotorcraft, and Tactical aircraft. We have secured over $100M in prime contracts from military customers.

The Merlin Pilot has accumulated more than 800 hours in the sky and currently powers 5 types of aircraft. Our deployed technology reduces operational costs for customers. Our team includes over 100 experts in AI and certified software for civil and military aviation. We hold extensive proprietary IP with software that combines AI with high assurance flight controls. We have a certification program, including an issued Certification Basis, Certification-Conformed Aircraft, and Approved Military Airworthiness Plans, and experience with FAA/EASA/DOD certification.

Our development strategy follows a three-step master plan:

  • Crawl: Involves rigorous testing and certification with industry regulators to develop the Merlin Pilot for full takeoff-to-touchdown flights, alongside developing advanced autonomous capabilities for mission execution and workload reduction.
  • Walk: Focuses on expanding the Merlin Pilot’s capabilities to function as a second human crew member, enabling reduced-crew operations for military and civilian freight, and delivering optionally-crewed capability for attritable and expandable mission use cases.
  • Fly: Aims to deliver certified uncrewed and reduced-crew capabilities, enhancing safety, utility, and efficiency across military and civil applications.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to build the AI-powered operating system of record that allows aircraft, both large and small, to fly autonomously.
