We are a voluntary organization founded in 1870, with 24,000 members. We work to uphold high ethical standards in the legal profession, promote legal reform, and serve both legal professionals and the public.

We run 150 Committees that create reports and host events each year. Our services include the Legal Referral Service, which connects clients with vetted lawyers, and the City Bar Center for CLE, which offers continuing legal education.

The City Bar Justice Center provides free legal services to disadvantaged individuals. Its programs include the Elder Law Project, offering life planning and elder law resources for low-income NYC seniors. We also have a Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) that supports the mental health and well-being of lawyers, judges, law students, and staff. This program helps with issues like ADHD, PTSD, vicarious trauma, and cognitive impairment. We also provide online programs, events, and membership services.

The New York City Bar Association employs 51 to 200 people. The work environment is flexible; many roles have a hybrid schedule combining in-office and remote work. Some positions, like Referral Counselor, can be fully remote with occasional in-person meetings.

The culture encourages cross-departmental collaboration, with teams cooperating on financial reporting, program development, and member engagement. The organization also supports professional development by providing learning opportunities, mentorship, and networking for interns and employees.
