Our company was founded in 2018 by the co-creators and maintainers of the Vitess open-source project. Our founders previously built infrastructure at YouTube, PayPal, Dropbox, and GitHub. Our core offering is a MySQL-compatible database. It provides horizontal sharding and non-blocking schema changes without manual implementation. Vitess, developed at YouTube to scale MySQL, lets databases shard horizontally. This distributes data across thousands of nodes, all routed through a single connection. Vitess powers databases for many large web properties.

Our Postgres service is a fully managed PostgreSQL cluster designed for performance and reliability. It features high availability across three availability zones with automatic failover, connection pooling via PgBouncer, and buffered failovers. It supports features like branch-per-environment, read replicas for scaling reads, non-blocking schema changes, and data protection with backups. Neki is our next-generation Postgres sharding architecture, built for large-scale workloads and fault tolerance. PlanetScale Metal provides high-performance cloud hosting on NVMe drives. It delivers unlimited IOPS and lower latencies compared to other cloud database providers.

Our platform offers 99.999% uptime for multi-region deployments and 99.99% for single-region deployments, with all database operations online. Key features include:
