Job Description
Version 1 has an exciting role for a dynamic and enthusiastic cloud and infrastructure consultant who enjoys working with customers and internal staff alike. You will be a solid team player and superb communicator who can deliver excellence in both project and support work. Based within our Cloud consulting team, this role is responsible for providing Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Linux / Unix systems consulting services, including technical presales, scoping, architecture, design, build and deployment of engineering solutions. The role is customer facing, and will entail liaising with customers to enhance current systems, plan and deliver projects, and implement new solutions. This particular role will entail development of innovative solutions in cloud databases. Many of our clients are requesting that their new developments be in cloud-scale relational databases, others are requesting our assistance in migration of their existing systems to these types of databases.
We are looking for self-starters who can take code artefacts in existing relational procedural code – e.g. T-SQL, PL/SQL and migrate to databases such as PostgreSQL without losing any functionality. You must also be able to, where necessary, migrate data elements as well. A reasonable grounding in other development environments, e.g. Java, Python etc. is extremely useful but the primary task here will be in helping to lead and build the space in the company in open source database technologies. Used to Agile and DevOps, and a fast pace, you will thrive in a busy environment. While large amounts of this role will be deep in the code working out the right answer, you MUST be able to operate in a confident, customer facing fashion that will sell the customer on your vision of the system.
The ideal candidate should be a self-starter looking to join a fast paced, multi-discipline team that provides project, customer and internal support at Version 1 and will have 5+ years’ experience in designing, building and supporting front line Linux / Unix / AWS environments. In particular technical knowledge and practitioner experience in AWS is desirable. A summary of the suitable candidate is as follows.
Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Experience in the full product lifecycle including: Concept generation, Design, Build and Support essential.
- Strong, first-hand experience of designing, building and supporting Enterprise solutions.
- Strong experience in Cloud deployments (Public & Private) o Excellent working knowledge of Linux/Unix and AWS.
- Good troubleshooting skills required.
- Considerable knowledge of relational and non-relational databases (CAP, ACID).
- In-depth knowledge of one closed source complex platform (e.g. Oracle or SQL Server).
- In-depth knowledge of one open source platform that has procedural and deep functionality (e.g. PostgreSQL, Aurora) .
Non-Technical Skills:
- Ability to work well on your own and within a team.
- Mentoring of junior team members.
- Ability to consult with customers and in a cross-team environment.
- Documentation and development of designs, processes and procedures.
- Experience working within a structured ITIL / ISO20000 IT Service Management environment.
- Customer facing and comfortable working across multiple customer environments o Experience of working in Public Sector IT.
Desirable Skills:
- Existing professional cloud qualification (e.g. AWS Solutions Architect).
- Enterprise virtualisation solutions.
- Server and desktop (VMWare, Hyper V, Citrix)
- Disaster recovery and site replication solutions.
- DevOps and automation experience.
- (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Terraform).
- Additional infrastructure skills such as networking / storage / etc. would be beneficial.
- Other Public Cloud experience such as Azure, or Oracle Cloud.
