Job description
About BusRight
Access to education begins with a safe, reliable ride to school. That’s why we’ve built BusRight, used by 70,000+ Transportation Directors, Drivers, and Parents across 34 states, that brings safety, communication, and confidence to school transportation. Our 50+ person team is powering the engine behind the country’s largest mass transit system: the yellow school bus.
We’re a remote team with hubs in New York City, Boston, and Austin. Curious what it’s like to be a BusRighter? Here’s a glimpse into our culture from a recent company retreat in Mexico, this BusRight commercial, and how we approach school bus conferences.
The Opportunity
As BusRight’s first in-house finance leader, you’ll set the foundation for a company that’s been doubling revenue year over year, driving capital allocation strategy, guiding investor relations, and partnering with the leadership team to fuel smart, scalable growth.
This is a player-coach role that blends strategic, cross-functional leadership with hands-on execution in an early-stage environment. We’re looking for a financial leader with strong judgment across financial planning, SaaS metrics, capital deployment, and who can motivate a team through storytelling. Here are some key priorities that you’ll lead:
- Work hand-in-hand with the leadership team and board on strategic planning, scenario modeling, and performance tracking.
- Lead our monthly close and financial reporting process, crafting clear, insight-driven updates for the leadership team and the board.
- Act as a strategic thought partner to department heads, connecting financial insights to hiring plans, targets, and team execution.
- Build dynamic, decision-grade financial models to evaluate ROI across high-leverage investments (e.g., sales, product R&D, CX expansion, etc.)
- Spearhead our corporate development roadmap, from venture debt strategy to future fundraising and key banking relationships.
- Own forecasting, budgeting, and cash flow planning across every department to keep our growth efficient and scalable.
- Launch a real-time KPI dashboard to give leadership a pulse on revenue, churn, burn, unit economics, and other important operating metrics.
- Oversee all core finance operations, including AP/AR, payroll, tax compliance, equity management, and benefits.
- Manage external partners across accounting, tax, insurance, and benefits to ensure smooth, efficient operations.
- Drive BusRight’s long-term financial strategy, aligning capital allocation with our vision.
- Be a cultural cornerstone and trusted coach within a small, remote-first team that moves fast and cares deeply.
A Day In The Life
You’ll kick off your morning with a 1:1 with the CEO to walk through updated runway projections based on shifts in our sales pipeline. Next, you’re jumping into a working session with the VP of Engineering to compare planned vs. actual spend and help shape hiring priorities that align with our budget and growth velocity.
Then, you’re finalizing month-end numbers in QuickBooks, syncing with department heads to align operating plans - like scaling our Customer Success team - with financial targets that keep us on track toward sustainable growth.
By the afternoon, you’re refreshing our real-time KPI dashboard, joining a product strategy session to advise on quote-to-cash timelines, and building out early slides for an upcoming board meeting. You might wrap up the day modeling capital allocation tradeoffs: how would extending runway vs. accelerating go-to-market investment affect our 2026 goals?
This role lives at the intersection of execution and strategy, where spreadsheets meet storytelling, and where risk management fuels enduring growth. At BusRight, you won’t just be closing the books, you’ll be writing the next chapter.
About You
- You bring low ego, champion the best ideas no matter where they come from, and know that culture isn’t defined by words, but by what we do and follow through on every day.
- Prior CFO or VP of Finance experience at a growth-stage startup (Series A - C preferred), with a proven track record of scaling financial operations in high-velocity environments.
- 10 - 15+ years of finance and accounting leadership experience, ideally in SaaS or tech-enabled companies where complexity, growth, and real-world operations intersect.
- Fluent in SaaS finance, from pricing strategy and margin modeling to unit economics and customer cohort analysis.
- Hands-on experience with fundraising and board relations, including owning investor updates, building data room materials, and managing the capital stack.
- Expertise across financial systems like QuickBooks, Bill.com, Carta, Gusto, and ideally Maxio, with a passion for building clean, real-time reporting workflows.
- Sharp strategic thinking with a strong execution mind, you can architect a long-term plan and dive into the weeds to make it reality.
