Job description

Leadership Profile: President

Location: Washington, D.C. | Remote

Status: Exempt, Full-time

The Opportunity

At a time when our democracy and our futures are on the line, Demand Justice is building a progressive movement to fight for our courts, hold those who confirm dangerous judicial nominees accountable, and build a vision and plan for restoring the rule of law.

Far-right forces have spent decades focusing on our federal judiciary, culminating in stacking the Supreme Court with individuals opposed to basic freedoms and who flagrantly abuse the public’s trust with wave after wave of clear ethics violations. Republicans have blocked consideration of Democratic Presidents’ nominees while jamming through Republican nominees, resulting in an out-of-balance Supreme Court that doesn’t reflect the values of the American people.

During the first Trump administration, the courts became rapidly politicized in the eyes of the public. Thanks to his far-right nominees, decisions have become more secretive while also becoming more extreme, rolling back long-cherished freedoms and making it harder for Americans to live healthy and happy lives.

A strong judiciary—fair and trusted in the eyes of the public—is critical to any truly free society. But the MAGA movement, restored to power, seeks a bench devoted to politics over the rule of law.

Demand Justice will use all our organizational tools—a c3, c4 and PAC—and the power of people to build a fair and independent judiciary and educate the American people and policymakers on the importance of the courts.

Over the next four years and beyond, we will:

  • Raise public awareness about the federal courts, including the Supreme Court’s harmful decisions.
  • Hold extreme or unethical judges and justices accountable, as well as the policymakers that support and enable them.
  • Provide an immediate response to President Trump’s judicial nominees, ensuring that Democrats fight against them and holding Republicans accountable for voting for them.

The Role

Seven years after its founding, Demand Justice seeks a courageous, visionary President to lead the organization into its new chapter at this perilous moment for our nation’s democracy.

The President will serve as an astute political strategist, a successful fundraiser, a tireless campaigner, an inspiring and bold leader, and a passionate defender of a fair, strong and trusted judiciary.

As a fearless strategist and a political risk taker, the President will be responsible for carrying out Demand Justice’s consistent achievement of its mission, strategic vision and financial objectives.

The President must be committed to values of equity and inclusion, as evident in work products, leadership skills, and interpersonal relationships, and to building a progressive movement to restore ideological balance and legitimacy to our nation’s courts.

Reporting to an active and vibrant Board of Directors, the President will bring experience developing partnerships and connections with funders and work closely with the Board to cultivate new funding sources.

Closely collaborating with a small staff, the President will hold overall strategic and operational responsibility for Demand Justice’s campaigns, educational programming, endorsements, growth, and sustainability.Key
