Engineering Manager - Message Security Products

Job description

About the Role

Abnormal AI is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Critical Email Products (CEP) team.

Our mission is to help customers strengthen protection and visibility across email by delivering Secure Email Gateway (SEG) products that integrate seamlessly into enterprise environments. The team builds reliable, scalable systems that enable fast onboarding, dependable operation, and a smooth protection experience, with an initial focus on launching URL Rewriting and owning Inbox Insights as core capabilities.

You’ll lead this team end-to-end, owning the execution and delivery of core CEP capabilities. You’ll partner closely with Detection, Product, and Platform teams to bring new features to life while ensuring our systems remain robust and efficient at scale. Near-term priorities include driving SEG solutions like DMARC and Inbox Insights toward GA, while laying foundational services to expand our solutions to other mailbox providers (Gmail).

Success in this role requires exceptional communication and collaboration skills. You will work across multiple time zones and functions to align priorities, manage stakeholders, and ensure seamless execution across teams. The ideal candidate is comfortable leading full stack teams in enterprise SaaS environments and thrives in a distributed, fast-moving setting where reliability, coordination, and customer experience go hand in hand.

What you will do

  • Recruiting and Team Building

    • Partner closely with recruiting to define hiring needs, craft job descriptions, and close top talent quickly
    • Proactively identify headcount or capability gaps and propose org design changes as the product and customer needs evolve
    • Build thoughtful onboarding experiences that set new hires up for long-term success
  • People Management and Growth

    • Foster a healthy, inclusive team culture centered on trust, engagement, and continuous growth
    • Manage performance through clear expectations, actionable feedback, and individualized coaching
    • Support engineers’ career development and ensure they have the context, clarity, and support to thrive
  • Execution and Delivery

    • Drive execution through clear planning, prioritization, and alignment with product goals
    • Partner with Product Managers and Tech Leads to ensure high-quality delivery and technical excellence
    • Communicate progress, risks, and priorities effectively to leadership, ensuring strong alignment and smooth upward management
    • Collaborate across teams and time zones to maintain consistent execution and alignment
  • Operational Excellence and Process Improvement

    • Take ownership of operational health by defining key metrics, improving systems reliability, and ensuring seamless releases
    • Proactively identify and close process gaps. Introduce tools or workflows that improve speed, quality, and clarity
    • Build scalable processes for launches, incident response, and customer support collaboration
  • Leadership and Collaboration

    • Translate long-term objectives into actionable strategies and measurable outcomes for the team
    • Partner with Product, Design, and Architecture to build cohesive, customer-centric solutions
    • Collaborate with senior leadership on quarterly OKRs, strategic planning, and the long-term evolution toward Abnormal’s broader product vision

Must Haves

  • 2+ years of engineering management experience, leading a team of 4+ engineers building enterprise-level customer-facing products
  • 4+ years of product development leadership experience (as a lead engineer or engineering manager) collaborating cross-functionally to deliver scalable, reliable, enterprise class, customer-facing products
  • 2+ years leading full stack teams responsible for building and maintaining production systems at scale
  • Proven ability to partner with recruiting to define hiring needs, attract senior talent, and build high-performing teams
  • Demonstrated strength in communication and stakeholder management. Must be able to align leadership, cross-functional partners, and distributed teams toward shared goals
  • A bias for action. Proactively identifies gaps, drives process improvements, and takes initiative without waiting for direction
  • Sets and maintains high standards for technical quality, reliability, and execution, raising the bar for themselves and their team
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with our stack (AWS, K8, Python/Golang, React, Postgres)
  • Previous email cybersecurity experience
