Join Google DeepMind as a Staff AI Product Designer on the GeminiApp team, crafting world-class iOS experiences for Gemini. This is a unique opportunity to be at the cutting edge of AI interface experimentation, tackling ambiguous, high-impact design challenges. You’ll be instrumental in inventing novel interaction patterns and rich multimodal experiences for users to get the most out of AI, with carefully considered connection to iOS guidelines & patterns. Your work will push the boundaries of interface design beyond today’s chat logs based on messaging apps, to create tomorrow’s “natively AI” interfaces.
Role Description
As the Staff (L6) AI Product Designer for Gemini on the iOS platform, you will be the architect of “first-of-their-kind” mobile interactions. We expect you to have 5 or more years designing for widely-respected iOS consumer apps. In this role, you aren’t just designing an app; you are designing conversational experiences with agentic behaviors and system-wide intelligence.
Your world-class solutions will show care and consideration for established native components and integrations that iOS users expect, while proposing novel new patterns that raise the bar for AI experiences on mobile devices. You will operate at the intersection of Google’s frontier models and Apple’s sophisticated hardware ecosystem. Your work will bridge the gap between high-latency LLM processing and the high-frequency, “instant-on” expectations of iPhone users. You will be a strategic partner to PMs, engineers, and researchers, ensuring that Gemini feels like a first-class citizen on iOS – intuitive, enjoyable, and indispensable.
Key responsibilities
This role requires a blend of creative problem-solving, strong leadership, and a proven ability to translate complex user needs into impactful design solutions on the iOS platform.
- Lead the design of innovative iOS experiences that drive simple, fluid conversations & journeys with generative AI.
- Partner closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, UX researchers, data scientists, and marketers, to define and execute IA models and interaction strategies.
- Develop a deep expertise in user needs across various geographies, platforms, and audience segments, leveraging this understanding to inform all design decisions.
- Translate complex user insights into actionable design solutions that deliver measurable value to our customers, specifically embracing AI as a tool in your design process not just the end-product for which you are designing.
- Elevate design craft and champion user-centered design principles throughout the product development lifecycle.
About You
You are a pivotal and highly impactful designer with compelling iOS platform expertise and design experience (5 years or more), capable of independently driving major design initiatives for AI product experiences. You thrive in complex, rapidly changing environments, consistently delivering breakthrough design, learning to use emerging tools in your design process (e.g., vibe coding), and effectively aligning diverse stakeholders to achieve significant user value.
To set you up for success as a Sr Staff AI Product Designer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
iOS Expertise: Demonstrable experience designing world-class iOS apps, and for OS-level integrations (e.g., Dynamic Island, Live Activities, Widgets). Direct experience designing features that utilize Apple Intelligence or App Intents.
Designing with AI Tools: Experience with “Vibe Coding” to design/test your solutions, or using LLMs to build functional UI prototypes.
Strategic Impact & Product Thinking: Addresses highly complex design challenges for strategic, high-impact AI product initiatives, prioritizing user goals and business strategy.
Cross-Functional Leadership & Alignment: Leads and influences cross-functional teams, ensuring design solutions prioritize user needs and product best interests. Recognized as a key influencer.
Mastery of Design Craft & Execution: Delivers intuitive, system-aware, and polished design solutions through exceptional craft. Recognized as a “go-to” expert, sharing knowledge and elevating team skill.
Adaptability: Thrives in complexity, continuously learning and adapting with a growth mindset. Evolves strategies and processes as needed.
Fluency in AI product design process: Leverages AI expertise, data and user insights, to craft impactful design solutions and drive product innovation.
Bonus Points: A background in motion design or sound design (crucial for “eyes-busy” mobile AI use cases).
Additional Info
Location: This role would be hybrid in-office 3x a week at one of the following hubs: Mountain View, Seattle, New York Citizenship: This role is open to US citizens or green card holders only. Compensation: This is a Staff L6 lever role, with a US base salary range for this full-time position at between $178,000 USD - $265,000 + bonus + equity + benefits.
