Job Summary

OpenEye is seeking an experienced Director of Quality Engineering to lead our quality organization within the Software Engineering department. This role is responsible for defining, executing, and evolving quality strategy across the platform while leading a high-performance organization that delivers reliable, scalable, and customer-focused software.

As the Director of Quality Engineering, you will own Software Quality Assurance (SQA), test automation, and software release management across cloud services, edge-based software, mobile applications, analytics and AI capabilities, and ongoing hardware integration. You will set quality vision and standards, drive predictable and high-quality releases, and ensure quality is embedded throughout the software development lifecycle from design through post-release support.

This role requires a leader who can assess current practices, strengthen the foundation already in place, and strategically adapt quality approaches as the team and platform scale. You will serve as a technical and strategic voice for the responsible integration of AI into quality engineering workflows, while building and developing strong teams, advancing modern quality engineering and automation strategies, and working closely with cross-functional teams to manage risk, improve outcomes, and balance speed with quality. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in quality engineering, proven experience leading managers and complex teams, and the strategic judgment to scale quality practices in alignment with OpenEye’s business objectives and culture.

Role and Responsibilities

Quality Strategy and Leadership

  • Establish and communicate a comprehensive quality strategy and vision aligned with company objectives and product roadmaps.
  • Own quality outcomes across the platform, including cloud services, edge‑based software, mobile applications, analytics and AI capabilities, and hardware integration.
  • Represent quality engineering in executive discussions, providing transparent reporting on product readiness, risks, and trade‑offs.
  • Establish frameworks for balancing speed and quality, enabling informed decision‑making on release timing and scope.
  • Increase organization‑wide transparency into quality strategy, test plans, and automation priorities so engineering and product leaders have consistent visibility into how quality is achieved across major initiatives.
  • Establish clear, consistent quality visibility standards that define how test plans, coverage, and quality signals are communicated at the feature, system, and release levels.

Organizational Leadership and Talent Development

  • Lead, develop, and mentor managers and teams across SQA, test automation, and release management functions.
  • Recruit, evaluate, and develop top talent to build and sustain world‑class quality engineering capabilities.
  • Oversee capability and capacity planning to ensure teams are appropriately staffed, skilled, and resourced to support current and future initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the quality organization.

Quality Engineering Practices and Automation

  • Define and evolve quality standards, methodologies, and best practices that drive predictable, high‑quality product releases.
  • Champion modern testing approaches, tools, and automation frameworks to improve coverage, efficiency, and signal.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that reduce defects, improve reliability, and increase delivery confidence.
  • Establish and track metrics and KPIs to measure testing effectiveness, release readiness, and customer impact.
  • Translate testing results and automation outcomes into clear, actionable quality signals that support faster, more confident engineering and release decisions.

AI‑Enabled Quality Engineering

  • Serve as a technical and strategic leader for the responsible integration of AI into quality engineering workflows.
  • Drive the responsible adoption of AI-assisted testing, automation, defect analysis, and quality analytics to improve efficiency and decision-making.
  • Strengthen quality practices for analytics and AI-driven capabilities, with a focus on accuracy, reliability, and customer trust, and ensure validation approaches are reflected in test strategies, release readiness, and quality signals.

Release Readiness and Delivery

  • Own quality readiness for releases through close cross-functional collaboration and clear accountability for release risk and readiness.
  • Drive release planning and execution from a quality perspective, ensuring clear communication of quality status and risks.
  • Drive the evolution of CI/CD pipelines to ensure automated testing and quality gates are integrated throughout delivery workflows.
  • Provide clear and consistent visibility into release readiness, including test completeness, known risks, and quality trade‑offs, to support predictable and well‑informed release decisions.

Cross‑Functional Partnership and Risk Management

  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships to embed quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Lead incident response coordination for quality‑related issues, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and preventive actions.
  • Manage quality‑related risk through proactive planning, visibility, and cross‑functional alignment.
  • Advance and operationalize the Highly Cohesive Team (HCT) model, ensuring quality engineers are durably embedded with software engineering teams to drive shared ownership, deeper context, and stronger delivery outcomes.
  • Lead the evolution of end-to-end device and system quality by aligning software, firmware, and hardware validation practices into a cohesive quality framework. This includes hardware qualification, OS image validation, firmware and software integration testing, and production readiness, with increasing accountability for standards and release gates to support scale and long-term platform health.
  • Strengthen day‑to‑day alignment between Software Engineering and Quality Engineering, enabling QA to operate as an integral partner throughout design, development, testing, and release - rather than as a downstream or rotating function.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8–10+ years of experience in software quality engineering, including ownership of test strategy, automation, and release readiness in complex software environments.
  • 5+ years of experience leading managers and multi‑discipline quality or engineering teams.
  • Proven success defining and scaling quality strategies across cloud‑based, distributed, and integrated software and hardware platforms.
  • Deep understanding of modern quality engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD integration, and release governance.
  • Experience guiding or applying AI‑assisted tools and techniques within quality engineering workflows, with an understanding of quality considerations for AI‑driven or data‑dependent systems.
  • Strong strategic thinking, communication, and cross‑functional leadership skills, with a track record of improving quality outcomes while balancing delivery speed.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively across teams and disciplines to manage risk, align priorities, and deliver reliable software at scale.

Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
