Title: Technical Writer
Location: Akron, OH preferred, remote anywhere in the continental US
Term: 5 month contract with potential extension
Role Summary
The Technical Writer is responsible for producing clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation to support a major IT initiative for a non-profit organization focused on addiction recovery and mental health. Working directly with the CIO, this role will document the “current state” of technology systems and assist in organizing the vision for the “future state,” translating complex technical information into accessible manuals and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Documentation & Planning
- State Analysis: Collaborate with the CIO to research, organize, and document the organization’s current IT landscape and help define future-state roadmaps.
- Complex Translation: Translate highly technical concepts and system architectures into clear, concise, and easy-to-understand language for both internal and external audiences.
- Structure & Design: Organize and structure content to maximize readability, usability, and logical flow.
Content Development & Lifecycle
- Manuals & Guides: Research, write, and edit comprehensive technical manuals, user guides, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Maintenance: Review and update existing documentation repositories as products, systems, or IT processes evolve.
- Branding & Standards: Ensure all materials are accurate, consistent, and fully aligned with company standards and branding guidelines.
Collaboration & Management
- Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with subject matter experts (SMEs), engineers, developers, and product managers to gather detailed technical information.
- Version Control: Manage document versions and maintain organized documentation repositories to ensure single-source truth.
Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience working with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts to document technical systems or software development.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Confluence).
- Ability to grasp and document complex technical systems and APIs.
- Familiarity with style guides and professional documentation standards.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

- Ability to work independently to organize “current state” vs. “future state” initiatives.
