Engineering Manager

Job description

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Rides Safety team. Your team will build and operate the systems that help keep riders and drivers safe before, during, and after every trip – from preventing abuse and dangerous behaviour to reacting fast when something goes wrong. This is a role with clear, measurable impact on millions of trips and a strong influence on how safety-related product and engineering decisions are shaped and executed across Bolt.

About us

With over 200 million customers in 53+ countries, Bolt is one of the fastest-growing tech companies in Europe and Africa. And it’s all thanks to our people.

We believe in creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome, regardless of race, colour, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

Our ultimate goal is to make cities for people, not cars, and we need your help to achieve this mission!

About the role

Rides Safety sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and operations. You’ll lead a cross-functional engineering team (backend, mobile platforms, data science) that ships risk signals, in-trip safety features, and incident tooling used by internal teams across many markets. The work is demanding: you’ll balance user experience, growth, and operational cost against safety and risk reduction. There are no perfect answers, you’ll often choose between more friction and more exposure, between false positives and missed events, and contribute to tradeoffs together with Product and Operations. You’ll use data, domain input, and your team’s technical judgment to iterate towards a safer and more reliable system, supporting safety-critical flows across multiple markets and regions.

Your daily adventures will include:

 • Leading and growing talented Software Engineers specialising in backend, mobile platforms and data science development, building and operating systems where failures have real user and operational impact.
 • Partnering with Product and Analytics to define safety metrics and use them to guide priorities; using them to guide priorities and measure impact; making pragmatic tradeoffs between catching more risk and avoiding unnecessary user friction, coverage and complexity, global solutions and local needs.
 • Defining and driving the team roadmap together with Product, Analytics, and Operations.
 • Creating a team setup that enables predictable delivery, good engineering quality, and healthy collaboration.
 • Driving individual 1-1s to mentor and coach Software Engineers to develop skills and uncover their potential.
 • Communicating context and decisions clearly to engineers, stakeholders, and leadership.

About you:

 • You have experience owning a product or platform area end-to-end, not just individual projects.
 • You can handle ambiguity, narrow down open problem spaces, and move the team from discussion to decisions.
 • You have strong backend engineering fundamentals, with the ability to review and challenge designs across backend services, mobile integration, and data/ML systems and ask the right questions.
 • You are comfortable working with data: metrics, experiments, dashboards, and basic statistical reasoning.
 • You have led high-performing engineering teams, and bring strong leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to attract, inspire, and retain talent.
 • 5+ years of hands-on experience in software development and a deep understanding of how to write maintainable code and performant systems.
 • Proven ability to get things done, maintain a strong vision for the future, set up and facilitate engineering processes and make data-driven decisions.

Experience is great, but what we really look for is drive, intelligence, and integrity. So even if you don’t tick every box, please consider applying if you feel you’re the kind of person described above!

Why you’ll love it here:

 • Play a direct role in shaping the security and user experience of one of Europe’s leading platforms
 • Impact millions of customers and partners in 600+ cities across 53 countries
 • Work in fast-moving autonomous teams with some of the smartest people in the world
 • Accelerate your professional growth with unique career opportunities
 • Get a rewarding salary and stock option package that lets you focus on doing your best work
 • Enjoy the flexibility of working in a hybrid mode with a minimum of 2 days in the office each week to foster strong connections and teamwork
 • Take care of your physical and mental health with our wellness perks

* Some perks may differ depending on your location and role.
