Role overview
CarGurus is seeking an Associate Corporate Counsel to join our Legal team and support a dynamic, fast-growing technology company. This role will focus primarily on labor & employment matters, while also contributing to litigation and claims management as well as broader regulatory compliance efforts.
This is an exciting opportunity for a thoughtful, business-minded attorney who enjoys solving complex problems, partnering closely with stakeholders, and delivering practical legal guidance that drives smart decision-making. You will play a meaningful role in supporting our People & Talent organization and helping CarGurus navigate an evolving legal landscape with confidence and integrity.
What you’ll do
- Provide day-to-day legal advice on labor & employment matters, including hiring, discipline, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, and employee relations issues.
- Advise on compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., wage and hour, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, leave laws).
- Deliver clear, practical, and timely legal advice to senior leaders within the People & Talent organization, demonstrating sound judgment, confidence, and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable business guidance.
- Draft, review, and update employment-related documents, including offer letters, employment agreements, separation agreements, policies, and handbooks.
- Partner closely with the People & Talent team on investigations, policy interpretation, and risk mitigation.
- Support employment-related aspects of corporate initiatives, including reorganizations and M&A activity.
- Monitor legal developments and help implement practical compliance strategies and training.
- Strategic management of employment and commercial litigation, including coordinating with outside counsel.
- Conduct early case assessments to determine risk and drive cost-effective resolutions.
- Support discovery, document preservation, internal fact investigations, and case strategy.
- Conduct active oversight of legal spend and outside counsel efficiency.
- Support responses to government inquiries and subpoenas.
- Monitor relevant law and regulations to enable a proactive compliance posture.
What you’ll bring
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 3-5 years of relevant labor & employment experience, including experience advising business clients and managing employment-related disputes.
- Strong working knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Experience supporting or managing litigation matters.
- Prior in-house experience at a technology company or within a high-growth, fast-paced environment is a plus.
The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles.
Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
Position Pay Range
$140,000—$176,000 USD
