Cockroach Labs

We created CockroachDB, a cloud-native, distributed SQL database, in 2015. This product helps enterprises run mission-critical applications that need quick scaling, disaster recovery, and global availability. CockroachDB is compatible with Postgres and aims for zero downtime, easy scaling, and control over data placement.

It handles transaction-heavy (OLTP) workloads using standard SQL and distributed, ACID-compliant transactions. Our database scales horizontally by adding nodes to increase read and write capacity, removing the need for manual sharding. We designed it for high availability, meaning it continues to serve queries even if nodes, availability zones, or regions fail. It also allows maintenance activities, like online schema changes and rolling upgrades, without service interruptions. CockroachDB uses multi-active availability with consensus replication, which ensures data consistency and enables zero RPO/RTO.

CockroachDB works with multi-region and multi-cloud setups, running on various cloud environments or on-site infrastructure. It lets us customize data placement policies to store data close to users for faster access and regulatory compliance. Our secure, fully managed CockroachDB cloud platform helps reduce manual database operations. We make it easier to migrate from existing PostgreSQL-compatible applications using its compatibility and the MOLT Live migration tool. Companies like Comcast, Lush, Bose, Netflix, The Home Depot, and DoorDash use CockroachDB for their applications. We specialize in open source, distributed databases, transactional systems, RDBMS, SQL, Kubernetes, serverless, and cloud database technologies.
