About DonorsChoose

DonorsChoose is an online charity founded in 2000 by Charles Best, a high school teacher in the Bronx. We make it possible for anyone to help public school teachers and students in need across America. Teachers post requests for resources such as books, pencils, technology, art supplies, robotics kits, and butterfly cocoons on our platform.

Donors can give any amount to projects that inspire them, especially those in high-need communities and Equity Focus Schools, to help address educational inequity. Once a project is fully funded, we vet all requests, purchase the items, and ship them directly to verified teachers.

We’ve funded over 2 million classroom projects, with teachers at 68% of public schools in America posting requests. Over 1.9 million individual donors, along with many corporate and foundation partners, have contributed over $314 million to support teacher requests. We provide transparency to donors by showing how every dollar was spent, the impact it made, and by sharing thank-you messages from students and teachers. Charity evaluators consistently give us high ratings for transparency and efficiency.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to make it easy for anyone to help a teacher in need. We aim for a nation where every student in every community has the tools and experiences necessary for a great education.

We are committed to combating inequity in school funding by inspiring support for students who lack access to resources for success. Our core values include equity, ingenuity, humanity, integrity, learning, and gratitude.

Team & Culture

DonorsChoose has between 51 and 200 employees. The team includes many former teachers, as well as professionals from startups and established brands. The work environment blends a tech company with a classroom, fostering a mission-driven, supportive culture.
