About Education First Consulting

Founded in 2006, we are a national strategy and policy organization supporting education changemakers across the United States. As a for-profit professional services firm with a not-for-profit focus, we provide expertise to clients like funders, states, policymakers, nonprofits, and local education agencies. Our goal is to improve education systems, support teachers, and benefit students. Our services include Strategy and Counsel, Grantmaking Strategy and Effectiveness, Policy Solutions, Program Design and Implementation, Educator and Stakeholder Engagement, Results-Driven Meetings and Facilitation, Invest for Impact, Research for Action, and building Coherent Systems. We have served clients in over 41 states and Washington D.C. Our 85 staff members live in 25 different states and collectively speak 18 languages. We also undertake pro-bono work to advance our mission and foster innovation.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to deliver exceptional ideas, experience-based solutions, and results. We aim to ensure all students—especially Black, Indigenous, other students of color, and those from low-income communities—are prepared for success in college, career, and life. Our vision is a world where every student succeeds, and income and race no longer dictate educational quality. Our core values include:

  • Achieving excellence by setting high standards for expert advice and solutions.
  • Advancing racial equity by fostering an equitable and inclusive culture.
  • Centering people by collaborating and prioritizing the needs of those closest to the problem.
  • Embracing growth with curiosity and continuous improvement.
  • Following through together by supporting colleagues and clients to achieve intended impact.

Team & Culture

We operate as a virtual firm with 85 team members—educators, policy advisors, advocates, and funders—spread across more than 25 states. Our work environment is flexible, allowing us to structure our days from various locations. Our culture is vibrant, built on original thinking, collaboration, entrepreneurialism, authenticity, and fun. We strive for a positive, inclusive, and equitable workplace that genuinely cares for students, clients, and colleagues. Despite being virtual, we foster connection through virtual Culture Club activities, coffee chats, all-staff calls, professional learning, and an annual in-person All-Staff Retreat. Professional development is a priority. We offer a coaching system, a competency model, individual goal setting, internal and external learning opportunities, and mentorship.

Benefits & Perks

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as a 401(k) with company match. Employees receive PTO days, 11 holidays, two firmwide shutdown weeks, and foundational bonding and maternity leave.
