Partners with the NHS to advance genomic healthcare and research in Britain.

About Genomics England

We work with the NHS to advance genomic healthcare and research in Britain, improving health outcomes. We analyze sequenced genomes for the NHS and provide researchers with data and technology to identify disease causes and develop medicines.

Established in 2013 by the Department of Health and Social Care, we launched the 100,000 Genomes Project with the NHS. This project showed how genomic insights could be used in healthcare and built a core dataset. Now, we help the NHS deliver genomic testing as part of routine healthcare.

Our work involves providing diagnostics and technology to improve genomic healthcare and make patient care more efficient. We also maintain a secure Research Environment where approved researchers can make discoveries. We are exploring whole genome analysis in newborns, integrating long-read sequencing into cancer analysis, examining healthcare inequality, and contributing to the COVID-19 GenOMICC Study. We specialize in genomics, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, whole genome sequencing, data science, oncology, rare diseases, and diagnostics.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to improve and expand our capabilities so others can deliver genomic healthcare and conduct genomic research.

We aim to transform healthcare by working with the NHS to improve genomic testing for diagnosing, treating, and preventing illnesses. We also accelerate research by providing health data and advanced technology for new medical discoveries and effective medicines. Protecting citizens is a core aim, which involves focusing on data security and public engagement to guide ethical discussions.

We operate with four main behaviors: pulling together for our mission, continuously learning and improving, delivering high-quality results, and acting as trustworthy, responsible stewards. These behaviors foster collaboration, help us adapt, ensure safe and timely delivery, and maintain accountability.

Team & Culture

We employ between 201 and 500 individuals, working at the intersection of healthcare, technology, science, and policy. We organize our work through multi-disciplinary teams that design and build services for NHS colleagues and the research and biotech communities. These teams are agile, fast-moving, and innovative, and strive to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

Our culture emphasizes making an impact; our contributions affect patients’ lives and influence genomic research. We encourage employees to take ownership and support them in learning new skills. We maintain a high challenge and high support culture, using annual and pulse surveys for feedback to address key areas.

We accelerate health technology by experimenting with machine learning, high-performance computing (HPC), and other technologies to develop decision support systems and bioinformatics pipelines. This helps us create new healthcare systems for personalized diagnosis and treatment.

Benefits & Perks

We offer many benefits and perks to our employees. For leave, employees receive 30 days of holiday plus bank holidays, with extra leave for long service. They can also apply for up to 30 days of remote working abroad each year, subject to approval.

We offer family-friendly provisions, including blended and flexible working arrangements, and enhanced maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave benefits. Financial benefits include a defined contribution pension scheme where we double-match contributions up to 10%, Life Assurance (3x salary), and a Give As You Earn scheme.

For professional development, we provide individual learning budgets, support for training and certifications, and reimbursement for one annual professional subscription. We also have an employee recognition program and a referral scheme.

Health and wellbeing benefits include a subsidized gym membership, a free Headspace account, access to an Employee Assistance Programme, eye tests, and flu jabs. We use a blended working model, with hybrid working expectations and on-site requirements typically once per week at locations such as Canary Wharf, Cambridge, or Leeds.
