An international non-profit providing mapping data and analysis to advance ocean sustainability through transparency.

About Global Fishing Watch

We are an international non-profit founded in 2017 by Oceana, SkyTruth, and Google. Our goal is to promote ocean sustainability by making fishing activity more transparent.

We provide a mapping platform where users can view, download, and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time. We turn large datasets into information that helps govern ocean resources, producing maps, data, and analysis for scientific research and ocean management. Our work includes creating new open-source datasets and analyses with scientific institutions.

We also offer technical support, API support, and training for our tools and data. We work with governments and authorities to help monitor vessels and ensure compliance, partnering with countries and regional institutes to build capacity and train them in fisheries, biodiversity, and marine protection.

Mission & Values

Our purpose is to create and publicly share knowledge about human activity at sea, enabling fair and sustainable use of the ocean. We believe that making human activity at sea common knowledge helps safeguard the global ocean. We are committed to increasing transparency in commercial fishing and promoting sustainable ocean management.

As an equal opportunity employer, we provide an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for all employees and partners. We welcome contributions from people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures to advance our mission.

Team & Culture

We are a fully remote, globally distributed team of 51-200 professionals located in over a dozen countries. Our team represents diverse cultures and native languages.

We maintain a creative, agile, and fast-paced work environment. We move from concept to delivery with flexible planning, emphasizing high autonomy, strong connections, and collaboration. Remote work is central to our culture. We prioritize work-life balance through flexible hours and asynchronous communication, focusing on what we produce rather than hours spent. We support professional development and growth for all staff through training programs.

Benefits & Perks

We offer competitive and fair compensation. Benefits include health insurance, and depending on your country of employment, supplemental benefits like life, dental, and vision insurance. We provide paid time off, including sick leave, personal leave, bereavement, and an annual office closure each December (about one extra week). We also offer flexible work hours and paid parental leave for both parents, complying with local regulations. Employees receive a stipend for home office setup, which includes a laptop, monitor, and accessories. Other benefits, like pension or retirement contributions, may be available, consistent with local employment practices. We also support professional development and training.
