Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
About the Role:
The New York Times is seeking a forward-thinking Vice President of Enterprise Applications & Productivity Platforms to lead the strategy, governance and day-to-day operations of our Workday ecosystem and enterprise productivity application portfolio. This role owns how our core business platforms, from HCM and Finance to SaaS productivity tools, enable how work gets done at The Times.
In this role, you will push the boundaries of what Workday and modern SaaS platforms can do, champion emerging capabilities (including native and embedded AI), and ensure our application ecosystem is reliable, secure, cost-effective and continually evolving to meet the needs of our people and our business.
This role reports to the Head of Enterprise Technology and partners closely with HR, Finance, Payroll, Legal, Cybersecurity, Data and business leaders across the company. If you are excited by complex systems, care deeply about reliability, security and user experience, and enjoy shaping platforms to do more than they were originally designed to do, we’d love to hear from you.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office 3 days per week.
Responsibilities:
Enterprise Applications & Productivity Leadership
- Own the enterprise applications and productivity platform strategy, spanning Workday (HCM, Finance) and the broader SaaS productivity ecosystem used across the company
- Lead the Enterprise Productivity team, responsible for the lifecycle management of SaaS applications (e.g., collaboration, workflow, productivity, and business enablement tools)
- Establish clear ownership models, standards and decision frameworks for evaluating, onboarding, rationalizing and retiring SaaS applications
- Partner with Cybersecurity, Legal, Privacy and Strategic Sourcing to ensure SaaS tools meet security, compliance, privacy and vendor-risk requirements
- Drive cost transparency and optimization across the SaaS portfolio, including license management, usage analytics and contract governance
Workday Platform Ownership
- Own Workday platform strategy and roadmap in partnership with HR and Finance, aligning priorities
- Lead Workday security and tenant management, including security model design, role architecture, tenant strategy, release management and change control
- Oversee all Workday integrations (EIB, Studio, Core Connectors, APIs and third-party tools), ensuring they are robust, observable, well-documented and aligned with enterprise integration patterns
- Own Workday reporting and analytics capabilities supporting HR, Finance, and Compliance
- Drive adoption of advanced Workday capabilities (Extend, Accounting Center, automation and AI features) to deliver measurable business outcomes
Governance, Risk & Operations
- Establish and run governance across Workday and enterprise productivity tools, including intake, prioritization, design review, release readiness and communications. Ensure compliance and audit readiness for access controls, segregation of duties, data privacy and internal policy requirements
- Coordinate across adjacent platforms (e.g., PeopleSoft, OneModel, Navex, Greenhouse, Coupa, Zip, Ironclad and others) to ensure clean data flows and coherent end-to-end processes
- Build and maintain documentation, standards and operating models so platforms are understandable, supportable and resilient
People & Leadership
- Build, develop and mentor leaders and individual contributors across teams supporting Workday, enterprise applications and productivity
- Foster a culture of inclusion, accountability, continuous improvement and strong partnership with business stakeholders
- Act as a senior leader within Enterprise Technology, contributing to broader platform, architecture and operating-model decisions
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Basic Qualifications:
- 12+ years of experience leading large-scale enterprise application platforms in complex environments
- Significant experience owning or leading Workday HCM and/or Finance, including security, integrations and reporting
- Demonstrated experience running or governing an enterprise SaaS productivity portfolio, including vendor selection, lifecycle management and cost optimization
- Strong background in access control models, audit readiness, data privacy and platform governance
- Experience with modern integration patterns (APIs, event-driven architectures, third-party SaaS integrations)
- Familiarity with embedded AI and automation capabilities in enterprise platforms, with a thoughtful approach to risk and value realization
- Proven success leading multi-disciplinary teams and operating in close partnership with HR, Finance, Legal, Security and Technology stakeholders
- Experience with Workday Extend and modern Workday integration tools (EIB, Studio, Core Connectors, REST/SOAP APIs, web services, event-driven patterns)
- Track record of leading technical reporting and analytics efforts, including Workday reporting, calculated fields and/or related analytics tooling
- Proven success leading a multi-disciplinary team (e.g., configuration, integrations, security, reporting) and operating in partnership with HR, Finance, Payroll and Technology stakeholders
- Ability to translate complex technical topics into clear, actionable guidance for executives and non-technical partners
- Demonstrated ability to move between strategic thinking and hands-on problem-solving
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience operating enterprise platforms in a global or multi-entity environment
- Experience with Workday Prism, Adaptive Planning or similar analytics and planning tools
- Experience building SaaS governance or “enterprise app marketplace” models at scale
- Prior experience working in or closely with media, technology or similarly fast-paced industries
