Weāre expanding our clinical leadership team and seeking a handsāon Medical DirectorĀ to support the Group Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in delivering safe, timely, and compassionate care across our diverse, worldwide operations.
This is a dynamic, clinical leadership role at the heart of international assistance, aviation & travel medicine, and medical/health insuranceāperfect for a physician who thrives on complex case management, clear decisionāmaking, and meaningful crossāborder collaboration.
What youāll do
Be a clinical leader, end to end:
- Actively participate in case management at all levels, including documentation and clinical decisionāmaking both ināhours and onācall.
- Provide clear guidance to nursing, medical, operations, and client teams, escalating to the Group CMO where appropriate.
- Assume direct responsibility for the clinical aspects of patient transfers during your onācall periods.
Shape worldāclass insurance solutions (majority of the work):
- Advise commercial and underwriting teams on medical risk for new products and existing books of business.
- Review individual cases for plan wording compliance and possible exclusions.
- Determine medical necessity and customary/reasonable practice in live cases and precertification.
- Assist the CMO in gathering clinical information for complex case investigations.
Deliver exceptional assistance services:
- Support global nursing teams with remote patient management.
- Guide safe, timely interventions in line with membersā coverage.
- Liaise with patients, families, treating teams, suppliers, and agencies to coordinate safe transfers.
- Maintain clear, timely documentation and direction for colleagues in Operations and Medical units.
- Help maintain clinically robust commercial transfer services (primarily UKābased; potential to expand).
- Determine when a patientās condition warrants evacuation or other benefits.
- Support fraud detection efforts in collaboration with clinical and business teams.
- Maintain situational oversight of highāprofile cases and active transfers during office hours and when on call.
Support DBA & workersā compensation:
- Guide nursing teams in initial management, rehabilitation, and returnātoāwork planning for members injured or ill while working abroad.
- Provide clinical input and oversight to our field case manager network.
Drive governance & clinical quality:
- Champion the enterpriseāwide clinical quality improvement program.
- Provide clinical input to root cause analyses of incidents/near misses.
- Escalate any clinical quality/safety concerns to the CMO promptly.
- Attend clinical governance committee meetings in the CMOās absence.
Develop and strengthen our global network:
- Join routine supplier/network management meetings with Operations, Networks, and Medical teams.
- Advise on the operational capabilities of current/prospective providers.
- Assist with issue investigations related to air/ground ambulance, hospitals, and other networks.
Schedule & onācall
- Core hours: 35 hours/week. Typical schedule 9:00ā17:00 (flex to 8:00ā16:00 when coordinated for core coverage).
- Onācall: 1 in 3 (currently two weeks every six), handling referrals from 17:00ā09:00 GMT and weekends. Onācall is in addition to contracted hours.
Where youāll work
Our medical and operational teams are based across the US, UK, and internationally. Proximity to Redhill (London), Cardiff (Wales) is preferred. The role includes periodic international travel as new services and products are developed.
What youāll bring
- Medical degree and active license.
- Specialty background suited to travel/assistance/acute care, e.g., Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Aviation Medicine.
- Proven experience in complex case management, decisive clinical communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Confidence working across time zones with concise documentation and escalations.
- Experience with insurance medicine, utilization review, or medical assistanceānice to have.
