About ITHAKA
We founded ITHAKA in 1995 as a non-profit to expand access to knowledge and education worldwide. We started by digitizing university and college library materials to preserve them and make them available online. Today, we work to make higher education and knowledge more affordable, improve outcomes for students and researchers, and preserve knowledge for future generations.
We achieve this through four main services:
- JSTOR is a digital platform providing access to thousands of books, journals, images, and primary sources for millions of students and researchers in 180 countries. We also support initiatives like Open Access dissemination of Latin American scholarship.
- Portico is a global digital archive that preserves nearly 500 terabytes of digital research content for libraries and publishers. This ensures long-term accessibility.
- Ithaka S+R is a strategic consulting group. We offer research and advising to colleges, universities, libraries, and museums, helping them with challenges like enrolling low-income students and veterans, increasing workforce diversity, transitioning to digital environments, and improving learning outcomes and graduation rates.
- JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services, launched in 2025, helps libraries manage, preserve, and access their archives and special collections.
Beyond our services, we also pursue various initiatives. We invest in companies and solutions that support education. We actively support higher education in prisons by increasing access to high-quality programs and library resources. We also help students complete their higher education journeys by addressing challenges with credit transfers, for example, by launching a public, non-profit, national credit mobility website. Our technology stack includes AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka, Java, Golang, Python, and TypeScript, and we use automated continuous delivery pipelines.
