We are a nonprofit organization, founded in 2003, that runs Wikipedia and our other free knowledge projects. We are a United States 501©(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California. We host Wikipedia and its sister projects, build software for reading, contributing to, and sharing Wikimedia content, and support our global volunteer communities and partners. We advocate for policies that help free knowledge grow and fund individuals and organizations working to expand knowledge on Wikipedia.

We primarily rely on donations from millions of individuals, with an average donation of about $15, as well as institutional grants and gifts. Wikipedia receives nearly 15 billion views each month, supports approximately 265,000 monthly volunteers, and sees 324 new edits every minute. With over 65 million articles in more than 300 languages, Wikipedia is among the top 10 most visited websites, and the only one hosted by a nonprofit.

We operate within the Software Development industry, focusing on non-profit work, free knowledge, open source culture, and education through internet and mobile technology, especially Wikipedia. We employ 501-1000 people.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization. Its staff and contractors are based in over 40 countries, united by a shared goal to advance free knowledge.

The Foundation supports a global community of nearly 250,000 volunteers who contribute to Wikipedia. They edit articles, check facts, fix code, add citations, and moderate content. The Foundation stresses that volunteers, not the organization, make content decisions on Wikipedia.
