About Last Mile Health
We partner with governments to build community health systems, training community health workers to provide primary healthcare in rural and remote communities. Liberian civil war survivors and American health workers founded our organization in 2007, initially naming it Tiyatien Health. We currently work with Ministries of Health in Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, and Sierra Leone.
Our work includes establishing public HIV treatment programs, developing and expanding community health worker initiatives, and responding to health crises. For example, we deployed health workers and provided resources during the Ebola epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic. We also launched the Community Health Academy, which provides digital training tools for health workers. We co-founded the Community Health Impact Coalition, advocating for better pay and professional status for community health workers. In 2022, we co-launched Africa Frontline First, an initiative to professionalize 200,000 community health workers across 10 African countries by 2030, aiming to reach over 100 million patients. Our five-year strategic plan, Closing the Distance, launched in 2023. It aims to deepen our impact in national community health systems and influence community health financing. In 2024, we began transitioning program management to local government teams in Liberia and Ethiopia.
- Over 53.3 million people have been served by community health workers through partnerships between Ministries of Health and us.
- 32,586 community and frontline health workers in rural and remote areas receive supervision, supplies, salary, skills, information systems, or digital tools in countries we support.
- Community health workers in Liberia have delivered 1,602,240 treatments to children under five.
