Job description

Who We Are

Monomi Park, headquartered in San Mateo, CA, are the creators of Slime Rancher and Slime Rancher 2, both critical and commercial successes with over 17 million players worldwide. Monomi Park is committed to creating inclusive and innovative gaming experiences that defy expectations. We are small but mighty with 40+ team members scattered across the US. There’s something new on the horizon for the studio, but we can’t let you in on the secret just yet; however, we are just as committed to Slime Rancher as ever. The success of the Slime Rancher Series has put us in a special spot among indies, where we can continue to make games on our own terms while offering the benefits usually limited to larger studios. As an independent studio, our goal is to develop unique games that delight and inspire players.

The Challenge

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering. While a hybrid arrangement is preferred, we are open to remote candidates within the following states: California, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, and Washington.

As the Director of Engineering, you will lead and develop a small team of engineers responsible for the design and development of game software. This is a people-first leadership role where you will mentor your team, build organizational capability, and foster a culture of excellence. Working closely with senior management, you will drive technical vision and strategy while ensuring successful delivery through effective resource management, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Director of Engineering will:

  • Lead, mentor and develop our engineering team, conducting regular reviews, providing coaching, and fostering technical excellence
  • Set clear expectations and hold teams accountable to high standards while maintaining morale and addressing performance issues with transparency and fairness
  • Define technical standards and architectural best practices, ensuring consistency and quality across all development efforts
  • Drive the technical vision, aligning engineering strategy with business objectives
  • Lead cross-functional technical discussions with design, art, production, and other departments to ensure seamless collaboration
  • Collaborate with senior management on critical trade-offs involving timelines, budgets, processes and software functionality
  • Proactively identify and remove blockers across engineering initiatives, ensuring teams maintain momentum and deliver on critical milestones
  • Establish and enforce code quality standards, development processes and optimization efforts

To succeed, you should have:

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5+ years of management experience supporting an Engineering team within the gaming industry
  • Shipped 2+ games with at least 1 in a management capacity
  • Proven track record of building, leading and developing high-executing engineering teams
  • Exceptional people management skills with demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and grow technical talent
  • Familiar with working in game engines, such as Unreal Engine or Unity, with a strong preference towards experience with Unreal 4 or 5
  • Experience with 3D single and multiplayer games
  • Experience implementing and championing engineering best practices
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Don’t check every box above? Research shows that while some apply when they meet ~60% of the criteria, candidates from marginalized groups, particularly within our industry, do not. If you think you have what it takes to do the job and can provide the materials necessary for the application, apply! Monomi Park strives to be an inclusive workplace for people of all backgrounds.

For local San Francisco Bay Area candidates at the mid-level range showing 10+ years of relevant experience, the starting base pay salary range is $225,000 - $285,000 + target annual bonus.
