Senior Game Designer

💰 $120k-$150k

Job Description

Who We Are: Monomi Park, headquartered in San Mateo, CA, are the creators of Slime Rancher and Slime Rancher 2, both critical and commercial successes with over 17 million players worldwide. Monomi Park is committed to creating inclusive and innovative gaming experiences that defy expectations. We are small but mighty with 40+ team members scattered across the US (with some international team members). There’s something new on the horizon for the studio, but we can’t let you in on the secret just yet. As an independent studio, our goals are to be people-first and develop unique games to delight and inspire players.

The Challenge: We’re looking for a Senior Game Designer. While a hybrid arrangement is preferred, we are open to remote candidates within the following states: California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington. This role is ideal for a hands-on Unreal designer who is comfortable implementing and prototyping gameplay features directly in Blueprints and editor tools, enjoys working on a small, collaborative team, and takes ownership of gameplay and systems from prototype through polish. While the role is titled Senior Game Designer, we are open to experienced, strong mid-level designers ready to step up and grow into a senior role.

The Senior Game Designer will be working on:

  • Owning significant areas of game design as an individual contributor, driving features from prototype through implementation while upholding the Game Director and Creative Director’s vision
  • Designing, scripting and tuning gameplay systems and mechanics in Unreal Engine 5 using tools such as Blueprints
  • Overseeing design prototyping efforts and identifying criteria for new features
  • Prototyping gameplay ideas and iterating on them through hands-on development and playtesting
  • Scripting, tuning and polishing gameplay systems, mechanics and level designs
  • Designing and optimizing the player experience, using analytical skills, player insight and creativity to craft engaging and surprising in-game experiences
  • Creating and maintaining clear, structured design documentation that effectively communicates concepts and requirements across various teams
  • Partnering with Production on task delegation, scoping and scheduling to keep development on track and within budget
  • Collaborating closely with small cross-functional team across Engineering, Art and Production, proactively surfacing issues and facilitating shared vision in ambiguous design spaces
  • Iterating on designs based on playtests, game metrics and team feedback
  • Contributing across multiple areas of design such as systems design, gameplay mechanics and level content
  • Guiding junior designers on the team, providing mentorship on Unreal and contributing to a positive collaborative work environment

To succeed, you should have:

  • 5+ years of game design experience (+ extra points if you have shipped title(s) under your belt!)
  • Strong experience with Unreal Engine 4 or 5 including proficiency with Unreal Blueprints
  • Experience working across multiple phases of game development, from early concept to late-stage polish
  • Strong generalist design skills with some demonstrated level design experience
  • Multiplayer game design experience
  • Deep understanding of game mechanics, systems design, game flow and player motivation
  • Strong ability to write and manage design documentation
  • Comfortable working on a small team, wearing multiple hats and contributing across different areas of design
  • Self-motivated with strong prioritization abilities

Don’t check every box above? Research shows that while some apply when they meet ~60% of the criteria, candidates from marginalized groups, particularly within our industry, do not. If you think you have what it takes to do the job and can provide the materials necessary for the application, apply! Monomi Park strives to be an inclusive workplace for people of all backgrounds.

For local San Francisco Bay Area candidates showing 5 to 8 years of relevant experience, the starting base pay salary range is $120,000 - $150,000 + target annual bonus. The final base pay will be determined by individualized factors such as candidate location, skills and level of experience.

As a small studio, we pride ourselves on offering competitive benefits. This includes:

  • Competitive compensation based on industry standards along with annual performance bonus
  • Fully covered medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage for you with dependents covered at 90%
  • 401(k) with company match and no vesting schedule
  • Flexible PTO, parental leave, compassionate leave, and paid holidays including winter break
  • Remote work stipends, wellness funds, anniversary rewards and company-wide events

The Process:

  1. Complete the application below
  2. Interview with the Hiring Manager (45 min)
  3. Interview with the CEO (60 min)
  4. Team Interview (45 min)
  5. Reference Check
  6. Offer!
