Digital Video Producer (Casual Worker)

Newsweek is seeking a Digital Video Producer to join our UK-based digital newsroom, producing high-quality, timely and platform-appropriate video journalism for Newsweek’s website, social platforms and YouTube. The producer will identify, source, edit and publish compelling video content that strengthens Newsweek’s journalism, supports newsroom priorities and increases audience engagement.

Reporting to the Deputy Managing Editor, the Digital Video Producer will monitor breaking and trending news, video agency feeds, social media and official sources to identify strong visual stories and opportunities. They will produce videos in formats suited to each story and platform, including reporter-led, voiceover, caption-led and soundbite-led videos. They will ensure footage is correctly sourced, verified, labelled, credited and presented in line with Newsweek’s editorial standards.

The producer will work closely with the Newsdesk, social team, reporters and editors to identify opportunities for video-led coverage and ensure visual content is treated as a core part of the journalism. They will work effectively to tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom and maintain clear communication and handovers, particularly during breaking news.

This is a remote casual worker position. Working days and hours are flexible and will be agreed on an ad-hoc basis according to the needs of the department and mutual availability. Those based in London will also have the option of working from the London office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce multiple high-quality, timely and platform-appropriate videos for Newsweek’s website, social platforms and YouTube.
  • Identify, source and create strong visual content that adds clear editorial value to Newsweek’s journalism.
  • Respond quickly to breaking and trending news, anticipating the visual requirements of major and developing stories.
  • Monitor agency feeds, official sources, social media and other relevant platforms for footage and emerging visual stories.
  • Edit videos in the format best suited to each story and platform, including reporter-led, voiceover, caption-led and soundbite-led formats.
  • Ensure all footage is accurately verified, clearly labelled, properly credited and correctly ingested into Newsweek’s systems.
  • Optimise videos for their intended platforms, taking account of format, length, pacing, framing, captions and editorial angle.
  • Collaborate with the Newsdesk, social team, reporters and editors to develop video-led coverage and support wider newsroom priorities.
  • Apply sound editorial judgement and rigorous fact-checking to ensure accuracy, fairness, clarity and journalistic integrity.
  • Keep assets and project files clearly organised and provide effective handover notes between producers and shifts.
  • Meet tight deadlines and respond flexibly to the demands of a fast-paced digital newsroom.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties necessary to meet the needs of the business.

Requirements:

  • Experience producing and editing video for a reputable, fast-paced digital newsroom, broadcaster or media organisation.
  • Proven ability to identify, source, edit and publish several video stories each day to a high standard.
  • Strong news judgement and a clear understanding of how video can strengthen digital journalism.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro or comparable professional video-editing software.
  • Experience producing video for websites, social platforms and YouTube.
  • Strong understanding of different video formats and how content should be adapted for individual platforms and audiences.
  • Experience sourcing, verifying, labelling and crediting footage from agencies, social media, official feeds and other third-party sources.
  • Strong scripting, caption-writing and visual storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work accurately and calmly to tight deadlines, including during major breaking news events.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to organise assets, manage multiple assignments and provide clear production handovers.
  • Solid understanding of media law, copyright, sourcing best practice and ethical journalism.

Desirable

  • Proficiency with Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Canva, Firefly, Flourish, Google Earth Studio or similar creative tools.
  • Experience creating motion graphics, maps, data visualisations or other supporting visual elements.
  • Experience filming original material and setting up remote or in-person interviews.
  • Experience advising reporters on filming, scripting and gathering material for video.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, YouTube publishing tools and social media publishing platforms.
  • An understanding of audience analytics and how performance data can inform video formats and coverage decisions.
