About Onebrief

Onebrief is collaboration and AI-powered workflow software designed specifically for military staffs. By transforming this work, Onebrief makes the staff as a whole superhuman - meaning faster, smarter, and more efficient.

We take ownership, seek excellence, and play to win with the seriousness and camaraderie of an Olympic team. Onebrief operates as an all-remote company, though many of our employees work alongside our customers at military commands around the world.

Founded in 2019 by a group of experienced planners, today, Onebrief’s team spans veterans from all forces and global organizations, and technologists from leading-edge software companies. We’ve raised $123m+ from top-tier investors, including Battery Ventures, General Catalyst, Insight Partners, and Human Capital, and today, Onebrief is valued at $1.1B. With this continued growth, Onebrief is able to make an impact where it matters most.

About the Role

We’re a fast-growing startup looking for a Senior Test Automation Engineer to partner with one or two Product Engineering teams and serve as a coach and mentor for quality in everything they build. You will be involved end-to-end in new feature development, working with Product and Engineering Managers, and leading the build-out and organization of test coverage. You will also mentor engineers on building the right automated test coverage and how to create code with a quality mindset from day one.

You will be a force multiplier, raising the bar for quality across the engineering organization and ensuring high-quality updates to a mission-critical product.

About You

You’re an experienced quality engineer who knows how to break things. You’re thoughtful, meticulous, and bring discipline and craftsmanship to the pursuit of building resilient, well-tested software. You love working directly with designers and engineers to develop and share patterns and practices that ensure the products you ship meet the highest standards. You are also an effective agent of change and an excellent communicator.

We’re in the defense space, so we’re looking for someone excited about our mission, eager to contribute to a growing startup, and comfortable in a high-trust, autonomous environment where everyone has a seat at the table. As an early member of our growing Quality team, you will make a foundational and lasting impact on both the product and the company’s trajectory.

What You’ll Do

As a Quality Coach, you will hold your engineering team(s) accountable for meeting the right release quality bar in the following ways:

  • Weighing in early in the dev cycle (during the design process) to identify potential problems in performance, security, usability, and cascading impacts before code is written

  • Developing test plans, quality-related procedures (such as bug bashes and defect triage), and documentation to support developers as they build new features

  • Writing automated tests at multiple layers of the pyramid (integration, E2E) with the goal of shifting defect detection as far left as possible

  • Coordinating with other teams to communicate how your team’s work will impact theirs before merging changes

  • Conducting exploratory testing and root cause analysis as needed, and mentoring others in these skills

  • Exercising excellent judgment to identify and negotiate quality trade-offs in a fast-paced, customer-driven development environment

  • Working with your fellow engineers to develop first-class quality metrics that align with overall quality strategy, with a focus on monitoring and observability

What We Look For

Required:

  • Knowledge of industry-standard quality engineering practices, along with solid opinions on when it’s OK to break the rules or challenge conventional wisdom

  • 5+ years of experience writing test automation at the integration or end-to-end layer for a React-based or React-like web application using any of the following:

    • Vitest

    • Postman / REST API testing

    • Playwright (E2E / API)

  • Experience creatively implementing shift-left methodologies that clearly improved code quality

  • Proven ability to mentor engineers in best practices around quality assurance and test automation

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines using:

    • GitHub Actions (or similar declarative pipelines)

    • Contract testing

    • Visual regression testing, homegrown or third-party

    • API endpoint testing

    • Log analysis with tools such as Grafana, Kibana, or Prometheus

    • Docker, Kubernetes

    • Performance testing using k6, Artillery, or JMeter

Most Importantly, You Are a True Onebriefer:

  • You are obsessed with creating value for real users

  • You are ambitious, scrappy, and a creative problem-solver

  • You learn quickly, work iteratively, and naturally seek collaboration

  • You approach your work with integrity, intellectual honesty, and low ego

  • You communicate frankly, clearly, and succinctly

  • You thrive as a self-starter, embracing autonomy and ambiguity
