About Polygon Labs
We help develop and grow Polygon, a protocol that offers blockchain infrastructure for global payments.
Polygon provides open-source protocols that bring together liquidity, scalability, and interoperability. We designed it as infrastructure for enterprises and institutions to move billions of assets instantly, focusing on speed, reliability, and low costs.
We built the Polygon protocol to scale money, allowing real-time blockchain transactions. It has processed over 5.3 billion transactions with 99.99% uptime and an average cost of $0.001 per transaction. Transactions settle in about 5 seconds, with 2-second blocktimes. The network supports over 117 million active addresses and a $3 billion stablecoin supply, handling up to 1000 transactions per second.
POL is our native gas and staking token, which secures the network and gives access to tens of thousands of applications. We also develop features like account abstraction to simplify user experience, supporting email logins, social recovery, and sponsored gas. We aim for internet-scale capabilities with a roadmap to support over 100,000 transactions per second. The Polygon network currently scales over 10,000 dApps and hosts more than 1 million deployed smart contracts.
We established the protocol as Matic Network in 2017. In February 2021, we rebranded to Polygon to reflect our expanded scaling and infrastructure solutions. Milestones include our mainnet launch; a merger with zk-rollup platform Hermez Network in August 2021; raising $450 million in venture financing in February 2022; committing to carbon neutrality in April 2022; and launching our zkEVM Testnet in October 2022. Polygon Labs was formally introduced as a company in January 2023, alongside the establishment of the Polygon Foundation.
