Job Description

The Team

Join the Marketplace Services (MPS) team as we continue our evolution from a service provider into a strategic platform enabler. Our purpose is to provide trustworthy data and shared services across APAC Candidate, Hirer and AI teams so we can deliver long-term customer value.

Within MPS, the Profile, Apply and Jobs Services (PAJS) team provide shared capabilities that underpin many of SEEK’s core marketplace experiences: how candidates discover roles, create and manage profiles, and apply for jobs, and how hirers create, manage and optimise job ads. These services sit at the heart of SEEK’s Employment Marketplace and are consumed at scale across the group.

We are an APAC-distributed group of teams (Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong) operating cloud-native, API- and event-driven systems at scale, and we steward a broad, mission-critical portfolio used across SEEK.

The Role

As a Staff Engineer for Profile, Apply and Jobs, you are the senior in-team technical specialist. Your primary focus is to design and build fit-for-purpose solutions while strengthening the health of the systems and platforms owned by the PAJS team.

You will:

  • Lead the technical design and implementation of PAJS, defining architectural approaches that balance reliability, performance, security and cost.
  • Act as the technical escalation point for the team, deep-diving on complex issues and owning production incidents through to resolution.
  • Drive platform and system health, ensuring PAJS align with SEEK’s technical metrics and are well-architected, observable and maintainable over time.
  • Partner with your Engineering Manager, Product Manager and Senior Staff Engineer to shape the team’s technical roadmap, aligning it to Marketplace Services’ and SEEK’s broader technology strategy.
  • Uplift engineering practices in the team - advocating for clean, well-tested, secure code, strong DevOps practices, and effective incident management.
  • Mentor and coach engineers in the squad, helping Senior and Software Engineers grow in system design, debugging, and operational excellence.
  • Build strong relationships with other Marketplace Services teams (Identity, Notifications) and adjacent domains to design clear, composable interfaces and reduce integration friction.

You’ll be hands-on in code while also looking ahead, connecting day-to-day design decisions to the longer-term evolution of Profile, Apply and Jobs within the SEEK marketplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver robust services and APIs for Profile, Apply and Jobs, using modern, cloud-native patterns (event-driven, messaging, resilient integrations).
  • Own technical quality and operational readiness for the team’s services, including observability, alerting, incident response and post-incident improvement.
  • Champion platform health, driving down tech debt, simplifying architectures and ensuring systems meet agreed reliability, performance and security targets.
  • Lead technical discovery and spikes for significant changes, de-risking architectural choices and turning findings into actionable plans for the squad.
  • Collaborate across teams in the wider SEEK Group to align interfaces, contracts and patterns where PAJ services integrate.
  • Mentor and support engineers across our through pairing, design reviews and constructive feedback, modelling high standards in craft and collaboration.
  • Act as a SEEK engineering ambassador, contributing to the wider engineering community (e.g. guilds, mentoring, hiring, communities of practice).

What makes this role unique?

  • Core to SEEK’s marketplace - PAJ services power foundational candidate and hirer experiences across SEEK’s products and are consumed by many teams across APAC.
  • Platform scope with product impact - you’ll work on shared capabilities that let product teams move faster, experiment safely and focus on end-user experiences.
  • Serious scale and complexity - you’ll operate in an environment where services handle tens of millions of profiles and jobs, with high update volumes, and integrate with dozens of engineering and business teams across SEEK.
  • APAC-distributed collaboration - work closely with engineers and stakeholders across Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong in a remote-friendly environment.
  • Strong engineering culture - join a team that values deep collaboration, high standards in engineering, and continuous improvement in how we build and operate platforms.
  • Growth path in technical leadership - this role sits in SEEK’s technical leadership track, with clear expectations and pathways.

This is a rare opportunity to be a Staff-level technical leader in a niche but highly leveraged space, shaping critical Profile, Apply and Jobs Services capabilities that underpin SEEK’s growth and innovation across APAC.

Qualifications

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer who combines deep hands-on engineering skills with strong technical leadership within a team.

You’ll bring:

  • Proven experience as a staff engineer or similar level role designing and delivering large, complex features or systems in a modern, distributed environment.
  • Strong system design and architecture skills, able to define the architectural vision for a team, make pragmatic trade-offs and evolve systems iteratively.
  • Hands-on engineering expertise, ideally including:
  • TypeScript/JavaScript and modern backend frameworks.
  • Cloud-native architectures, preferably on AWS (e.g. SQS/SNS, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB or similar).
  • Event-driven and messaging-based integrations.
  • Track record of uplifting engineering practices - testing, code quality, security-by-default, observability and CI/CD in your team.
  • Operational maturity, including experience with on-call, incident response, post-incident reviews, capacity/performance considerations and continuous improvement.
  • Strong influence and collaboration skills, able to work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, designers and peers in other teams to align on goals and solutions.
  • Mentoring and coaching experience, growing engineers through pairing, feedback and design guidance, and contributing to a healthy, inclusive team culture.
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging primarily with technical stakeholders while also explaining complex topics to non-technical audiences when needed.

If you have the skills, curiosity and an adaptable mindset but don’t meet every responsibility or qualification listed in this advertisement, we’d still love to hear from you.
