We are an independent, nonprofit newsroom founded in 2008. We produce investigative journalism that exposes abuses of power and betrayals of public trust by government, business, and other institutions.

Our journalism covers a wide range of topics, including government and politics, business, criminal justice, the environment, education, health care, immigration, and technology. We aim to create real-world impact, and our work has led to new laws, the reversal of harmful policies, and accountability for leaders.

As a nonprofit, we are primarily funded by donations. Our work includes investigative news articles, the Local Reporting Network fellowship program, and tools like Rx Inspector (a database of generic drug factories and FDA inspection records) and the Nonprofit Explorer database. We also provide information on PPP Loans. Additionally, we produce various video content, such as explainer videos, behind-the-scenes features, and reporter-led shows for platforms like YouTube.

For our technical roles, we support continuous improvement in development processes, including code reviews and deployment pipelines. We also manage technical debt and maintain high-quality systems.

Employees can expect opportunities to travel for team retreats, training, conferences, and reporting projects when necessary.

Grant-funded positions, like those in the Local Reporting Network fellowship program, pay an annual salary of up to $80,000, plus a 25% benefits allowance, paid monthly.
