A new model unites healthcare and education for children and families impacted by systemic poverty and racism.

About The Primary School

We developed a new school model that integrates parents, educators, medical, and mental health providers in a child’s life, starting from birth. We aim to support children and families impacted by systemic poverty and racism, providing support to learn, be well, and thrive.

Our approach starts early, partners with families, and integrates healthcare and education systems to serve the whole child. Ultimately, we want to create a replicable model that can be implemented in diverse communities and sustained with public funding nationwide. We operate two primary program sites in East Palo Alto and East Bay, California, and also have an early childhood program in San Francisco. These sites are centers for innovation and learning.

Our services support a child’s health, academic, and social-emotional development from infancy through early adolescence. We offer a ‘Birth to Three’ program in East Palo Alto and Belle Haven for eligible families. Priscilla Chan and Meredith Liu founded us in 2015. Our first site opened in East Palo Alto in 2016 and has since grown to serve over 300 families and children.
