About Viam

We were founded in 2020 by Eliot Horowitz, co-founder and former CTO of MongoDB, and are based in New York City. We provide a full-stack software platform for robotics and AI, helping users build, deploy, and manage intelligent machines from prototype to production. Our platform integrates modern software engineering practices into robotics.

Our platform offers hardware-agnostic APIs, data and AI tools, and fleet management. Our toolkit includes simple hardware integration with built-in drivers for over 200 components and hundreds more built by the community, such as sensors, cameras, robotic arms, and actuators. We make data and AI easy by enabling real-time data capture, syncing, labeling, and training models directly within Viam to create continuously improving systems. For fleet management, our platform allows users to push remote updates, monitor performance, and troubleshoot deployed robots from customized dashboards.

We also support a strong developer experience, allowing logic to be written in Python, Go, or C++. Users can build accompanying web and mobile applications with TypeScript, Flutter, and other languages, all supported by our SDKs and APIs.

Our platform includes 1,000 modules, supports over 500 robots, and can reduce time to market by up to 6x. We apply our solutions across various industries, such as a robotic sanding partnership with Viking Yachts for fiberglass finishing, and applications in improving the fan experience, like robotic wine pouring demonstrations. Our technology has been used in solutions for customers like Sbarro, UBS Arena, and Canyon Runner, and for developing AI-powered solutions like QuickQueue for managing restroom wait times in sports arenas, food service, and factory environments. Other organizations we work with include Transmutex, CompScience, NY Islanders, Digital Yacht, Tennibot, SIMRAD by Kongsberg, and GOST.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to use technology to create a smarter, happier, and more sustainable world. We aim to provide an engineering platform for solving problems in the physical world, helping innovators across disciplines address complex challenges with practical solutions and make a positive impact on industries, communities, and the planet.

We operate under these core values:

  • Vision driven: We believe smart machines can improve the world. We empower software and hardware engineers to build successful solutions, and we succeed when our users do.
  • Collaborate openly: We achieve the best results through teamwork, open feedback, healthy discussion, and transparency.
  • Act decisively: We value progress over perfection, focusing on quick iterations towards long-term goals, learning from mistakes, and taking initiative. This allows our users to build swiftly.
  • Lead with curiosity: We continuously explore new ideas for personal and product improvement, value learning, and embrace a playful approach to discovery.
  • Succeed through diversity: We value diverse thought in decision-making, build strong teams from various backgrounds, design agnostic tools for a broad user base, consider diverse human-robot interactions, and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Hold ourselves accountable: We take initiative for positive results, balance confidence with humility, own our work and actions, lead by example, and build a platform our users can rely on.
