Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Marketplace team builds the core decision systems that keep Waymo running smoothly. They design the algorithms that match riders to vehicles, optimize routing, balance supply and demand, forecast rider demand, and power dynamic pricing. Their work ensures the fleet stays efficient, riders get fast pickups, and the AV network operates safely and profitably across cities.

Our team functions as the core intelligence for the Waymo platform, designing and implementing the sophisticated algorithms for rider vehicle matching, dynamic pricing, efficient routing, and predictive supply demand balancing. Their work ensures riders are connected with the optimal Waymo vehicle efficiently, safely, and with minimized wait times.

In this hybrid role, you will report to an Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Implement and scale the core economic engine for Waymo’s ride-hailing commercial services. This collection of systems manages trip requests; matches right vehicles to riders; calculates the price of rides; positions Waymo’s vehicle for future demands.
  • Developing infrastructure for automatically training and deploying sophisticated optimization and prediction ML models to make real-time decisions for pricing, matching, and positioning.
  • Developing experimentation, monitoring and analysis infrastructure for analyzing ongoing deployed models.
  • Partnering with product data scientists to develop and productionize pricing and matching models for Waymo.

You have:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of experience programming in backend coding languages.
  • Experience in building backend distributed systems.

We prefer:

  • Experience in C++.
  • MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in developing low latency, large-scale, user facing distributed systems.
  • Experience in developing machine learning/optimization infrastructure and pipelines.
  • Prior experience building and deploying ML / Optimization models into production environments.
  • Experience at another Ride hailing or Marketplace company.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for the role location or, if the role can be performed remote, the specific salary range for your preferred location, during the hiring process.
