About Accountability Counsel

We protect human rights and the environment by supporting communities worldwide. We advocate for people harmed by internationally financed projects, using strategies that help communities access justice and influence policy. We help communities use accountability offices to address and prevent harm.

We push for accountability offices to be accessible, independent, transparent, fair, and effective. We also provide trainings and tools, conduct research, and track trends in the field of accountability.

Our work started in 2009 with a community case in Oaxaca, where Indigenous communities successfully negotiated the cancellation of a hydroelectric project. Since then, we have expanded our direct advocacy globally and used what we learned to advocate for policy changes, encouraging investors to create and improve accountability tools.

We have equipped 3.9 million people to defend their rights, supported 142 communities in seeking justice, and pushed 162 institutions to commit to accountability. Our expertise covers International Human Rights Law, Dispute Resolution, IFI Accountability, Policy Advocacy, International Environmental Law, Community Lawyering, Corporate Accountability, Social Justice, Environmental Justice, Gender, and Impact Investing.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to defend rights and seek justice with communities. We specialize in giving communities a voice at the highest levels of power when their land, lives, and livelihoods are threatened.

We believe that money is power, and that power can be held accountable. Our goal is to create a world where people and the planet come before profits. We advocate for financial institutions to respond to demands that come directly from impacted communities, ensuring everyone has access to justice.

Team & Culture

We are a team of 11-50 people. Our work with communities worldwide is what makes our impact possible. We prioritize growth, wellbeing, and equity through our policies and practices.

Our culture respects the independence of impacted communities, allowing them to decide how to pursue cases. We see communities as driving change, and our advocacy is based on their feedback and collective power.
