Job Description

Company

Alphataraxia Management (ATX) is a fast-growing quantitative investment management group with offices in both Washington, DC and Downtown Los Angeles, CA. We specialize in wholesale electricity markets, where extreme volatility is the norm and the marketplace is constantly evolving, presenting new opportunities for growth and insight. We are currently one of the top participants in the power markets and are looking for hard-working candidates with genuine enthusiasm for solving complex problems to join our collaborative and high-caliber team. Here’s a little bit more about us:

  • We love to explain how things work both fundamentally and quantitatively.
  • We build all our own proprietary tools, enabling us to prototype, iterate quickly, and pivot when necessary.
  • We automate as many redundant processes as possible to maximize time spent on analysis, moving with minimal bureaucracy and a high level of ownership.
  • We take immense pride in our company values—you can learn more about them here.

Job Description

We are hiring an Investment Engineer to join our Investment Engineering team. In this role, you will help build the proprietary systems that underpin ATX’s trading operations. As a member of the team, you build and own proprietary tools that drive our investment decisions. You love diving deep into complex pieces of the investment problem, turning market insights into high-powered models and analysis tooling that create a sustained competitive edge in the electricity markets. You are driven to learn with investment analysts, automate analysis patterns, and expand the capabilities of our investment teams.

You will thrive at ATX if you are excited about tackling challenging technical problems, collaborating with quantitative peers, and connecting your engineering work to real-world market impact. This role is well-suited for individuals who are eager to learn, grow, and take ownership in a dynamic environment.

You will:

  • Build forecasting and analysis tooling that directly support our investment strategies, focusing on capturing the firm’s unique understanding of the markets through software
  • Develop expertise in energy markets by working closely with our investment teams, learning market fundamentals, and understanding how our tools drive decision-making in volatile electricity markets
  • Collaborate with investment analysts to understand market analysis workflows, translate desired outcomes into intuitive software solutions, and gather feedback for continuous improvement
  • Own the product lifecycle for forecasting and analysis tools, including scoping outcomes, product design, implementation, testing, and ongoing enhancement based on user feedback
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues with focus on root cause analysis and building robust solutions that prevent future problems
  • Lead product discovery conversations with stakeholders to identify opportunities for new tools that drive measurable impact in our market analysis and investment performance

Applicant requirements

At ATX, we’re looking for engineers who are curious, motivated, and eager to connect their technical skills to meaningful outcomes in power markets.

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field; study of the electricity grid preferred
  • Advanced skills in at least one programming language, ideally Python
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to structure and deliver work effectively
  • Comfort working both individually and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Eagerness to learn about energy markets
  • Excellent communication skills: able to write clearly, listen actively, and tailor messages to technical and non-technical audiences
  • High level of ownership, resilience, and adaptability in the face of challenges
  • An ability to work in person on a hybrid schedule (three days per week in-office) in our DC office.

Benefits

We strive to offer best-in-class compensation and benefits alongside a supportive company culture.

  • $110,000 annual salary; annual discretionary bonus / signing bonus
  • 20 paid vacation days + 7 paid federal holidays
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision insurance (including HSA option) with no monthly premiums for best-in-class platinum individual plan
  • 401k match – 100% company matching on the first 4% of deferrals with immediate vesting
  • Annual firmwide weeklong summit
  • Fully remote work option for the month of July and between Thanksgiving and New Years
  • Casual environment (informal attire)
  • Snacks and unlimited coffee in the office
  • Firm-sponsored social events including happy hours, lunches, book club, and more!
