Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

Advances science, improves education, and supports communities through grants, ventures, and technology development.

About Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

We started the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) in 2015 as a non-profit to solve societal challenges in science, education, and community support. Our work includes advancing science through AI and biology, with the goal of helping to cure, prevent, and manage all diseases by the end of this century. This means we make significant investments in research, foster collaboration across disciplines, and develop innovative tools and data.

Our main focus areas are:

  • Science: We lead AI-powered biology efforts at the Biohub, where scientists, engineers, and AI experts come together to advance scientific discovery.
  • Education: Through Learning Commons, we integrate learning science into tools used by teachers and students to improve teaching and learning.
  • Supporting Our Work: We invest in initiatives through grantmaking and venture portfolios. Since 2015, we’ve awarded about $7.22 billion in grants and invested nearly $300 million in aligned ventures.
  • Local Giving: Mark and Priscilla support local communities by partnering with non-profits, backing local solutions, and addressing emerging needs.

Our work is carried out through various entities: Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, LLC; the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Foundation (a 501©(3) private foundation); the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation; and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Advocacy (a 501©(4) organization).

We specialize in biomedicine, education, technology, AI, open science, and rare disease.

Mission & Values

We founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges, like curing or preventing disease, improving education, and addressing local community needs. We operate under a set of core values:

  • Stay close to the work: Our teams work directly with educators, parents, scientists, and community leaders to make sure the voices of those most impacted guide our solutions.
  • Build for the long term: We are committed to long-term change, knowing that breakthroughs can take decades, and we focus on sustained dedication.
  • Learn fast: While taking a long-term view, we also move quickly through experimentation, iteration, and reflection to tackle urgent challenges.
  • Be daring and humble: We pursue ambitious future goals by prioritizing the perspectives and experiences of the communities we serve. Our aim is to accelerate their work with new technologies and tools.
  • Collaboration is the tool: We believe it’s important for people from diverse backgrounds to work together. We bring together experts, advocates, engineers, and change-makers to foster interdisciplinary cooperation.

Team & Culture

We employ between 201-500 individuals. We cultivate an employee-focused culture where people are valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Our employees actively shape the culture by leading programming, including happy hours, lunch and learns, volunteer opportunities, and offsites.

We place a high value on collaboration, viewing it as essential to our work. We believe effective collaboration is fostered through in-person connections and cultivate a team-oriented environment, envisioning our Redwood City offices as a hub for innovative ideas and interdisciplinary interaction. Many roles within CZI operate in a hybrid work environment.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) help build a sense of belonging and community, including:
