Founded in 1999, New America functions as a civic platform. We combine a research institute, technology lab, solutions network, media hub, and public forum. We generate ideas, design evidence-based public policies, and find, share, and scale locally tested solutions to public problems. We also develop legal, political, and technological tools to build democratic capacity and tell stories to provide insight into societal achievements and future possibilities.
Our research and policy recommendations address five main areas: education and work; family economic security and wellbeing; global politics for people and planet; political reform and civic engagement; and technology and democracy. In our work, we prioritize equity, share the stories of individuals most affected by the problems we address, invest in developing future leaders, and actively engage with local perspectives.
Our activities include producing audio-visual content, live events, and podcasts, as well as providing communications support for various programs. We manage financial operations like accounts payable, vendor communications, and financial planning and analysis. We also lead projects and offer technical assistance for initiatives such as the Accelerator for Community Colleges in the Innovation Economy, which helps develop a STEM and emerging technology workforce. Additionally, we direct programs like the Eviction Data Response Network, which builds data infrastructure and translates partner insights into policy recommendations for state and federal leaders.
