About NYISO

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) was established in 1999 as a not-for-profit corporation. We operate New York State’s bulk electricity grid, administer competitive wholesale electricity markets, and conduct long-term planning for the electric system. We also advance the technological infrastructure of the electric system serving New York. Our core work includes power system reliability, market design and administration, power system planning, and technology development for power and wholesale energy markets, renewable energy, and the future grid. We perform power system planning and technical engineering studies for reliability, economics, operations, and performance. We develop and maintain power system models, conduct techno-economic analyses, and run market simulations. We coordinate interconnection analyses and support grid infrastructure development to help meet renewable energy and carbon-free goals, such as a 2040 CO2-free electric system target. We analyze power flow, short circuits, transfer limits, and dynamic stability to ensure compliance with NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC standards. We also develop short-term and long-term forecasts for peak and energy demand. These forecasts use statistical, engineering, and data science methods and consider factors like weather trends, behind-the-meter solar, and electric vehicles. Our additional functions include managing regulatory filings, monitoring actions from agencies like FERC, and maintaining tariffs and regulatory records. We provide IT services, such as architecting and managing Microsoft server and client environments, and develop software for finance technologies. We also handle external and internal communications on technical energy topics, the electric grid, climate/environmental policies, and wholesale electric markets.
