About Smart Wires Inc.
We provide grid enhancing technology and services to electric utilities. Our solutions unlock capacity and solve critical grid problems, making the grid more flexible, reliable, and affordable. This helps integrate clean energy and new demand faster and more affordably, while meeting growing electricity needs.
Our offerings include power flow control solutions such as PowerLine Guardian®, Power Guardian™, and SmartValve®, as well as SUMO software. We also specialize in transmission reliability, congestion management, distributed FACTS, transmission line monitoring, dynamic line rating, digital power flow control, and analytics services. Our technology has helped integrate clean energy and new demand, improving supply security and saving costs.
We started in 2010 to commercialize a smart power flow control concept developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Our first pilot project using PowerLine Guardian® devices was in 2012. In 2016, EirGrid and ESB Networks in Ireland deployed our first-generation SmartValve™. By 2019, SmartValve™ became our core technology. The third generation offers 10 MVAr of power flow control. A large-scale SmartValve™ project with National Grid Electricity Transmission in the UK unlocked 1.5 GW of capacity in 2021. We added SUMO software to our technologies in 2022. As of 2023, our grid enhancing technologies have been deployed across four continents, unlocking over 3.5 Gigawatts of capacity, enough to power over 2.5 million homes.
