Our Future Health UK

We are the UK’s largest health research program, established in 2020 as a registered charity. We aim to create a detailed picture of the UK population’s health by recruiting up to five million adult volunteers. Each volunteer completes a questionnaire and provides a blood sample, which we then link to their health records. This combined data helps health researchers find new ways to prevent, detect, and treat diseases like cancer, diabetes, and dementia.

We design and improve the entire process for researchers, ensuring they have transparent, compliant, and user-centered access to data. This involves working with various departments: Commercial, Access, Technology, Product, Governance, and Legal. We also develop software to engage participants, help them understand the research, and encourage wider participation. Our engineers use TypeScript for frontend, Python for backend, and PostgreSQL for data storage. We manage our infrastructure with Terraform, running on Azure with Kubernetes and AppService.

Data management is central to our work. We oversee governance and operations for various data types, including genetic and health records, at a national scale. We work with technology, information security, and data protection teams to provide secure data access for researchers within a Trusted Research Environment. Our engineering team focuses on delivering high-quality, reliable, and secure systems, including those that scale to handle petabytes of genotyped and imputed data.
